Hi All,

Granted I'm a noob so if i'm asking a stupid question point it out.

We bought a block of land in Linton a year ago(almost) and one of the first things we did was put up a shed and a gate. And so I had to dig some holes for posts.

In total i dug 7 holes(using a petrol powered post hole digger that wouldn't start). Of these holes they all had a similar structure.

2 inches organic brown soil.
10 inches light fluffy white sandy soil
Hard white clay

However one hole did not have clay at the bottom(about 30cms deep) it had rounded quartz pebbles, but rather small about 10mm.

My question is would this stuff be the remnants of a riverbed and worth panning?

Marauder,
You are thinking about it you have asked the question.....
I say you have nothing to lose give it a go......
If you find nothing you have satisfied the itch ....

Agree with Jamie give the digger a service....

You might end up like the old bloke here in the West...
He was digging post holes for a fence when he spotted a couple of bits of colour.....
He went round in circles out from this hole and found lots more colour.....
Has since sold the property to a mining company for $90 odd mil....
Give it a go you have nothing to loose

Cheers Nanjim

Yeah, the posthole digger is well rooted, was cheapy that my brother in law bought from bunnings and it never ran well when it did. Won't start and not sure why.

Wish I could use one out in the field.
Would be a very handy addition to the kit.

I use a non motorised one for sampling in shallow areas, not as good as a powered one of course but still easier than digging a 3 foot deep hole with a shovel. Take along a crowbar though. a 150mm one pulls up a touch less than a pans worth, if you're having trouble lifting loose gravel then splash a cup or two of water in then tamp it down real hard.
