Hey Scott,
Go to Aussie Detecting in the main street of Bendigo (or any other prospecting store) & buys some gear off him & i'm sure he'll point you out in the direction to get you started.
Grab a prospecting map of the area from him too - can't remember what they called.
Any how, an other thing is to do a search on this forum "Bendigo, panning" something like that.
I remember going to visit Bendigo & asking for some places to try out. From memory, not that I ended up going to this spot, but someone said to try the creek that runs behind the botanical gardens(don't pan in or near the gardens tho ;) ).
I've been to the Whipsticks a few times & got some colours - although I'm never there long enough to have a decent crack. only get 2hrs or so chance...

That prospecting map you can buy from most prospecting supply shops + Google will point you in a good direction.

Good luck out there

Or maybe he hasn't had a chance to read the replies yet.

Was thinking the same thing mfdes -- hope you're right :)

I just read through this thread (as I have done with a number of others so far) and I would like to say thanks to ALL of you who replied -- not only for reaffirming my idea that research is THE KEY to starting any new hunt, but also for a couple of tidbits regarding where one might get started in the hunt :)

I know I'm a relative newbie here (and newbie to prospecting as well, compared to many of you long term regulars anyway :))

I've spent a lot of time online trying to figure out where and how to get the yellow stuff, plus many hours testing at home and in the field ... much of which has yielded very little -- especially during my first year (2011) ... but it obviously all added to my knowledge along the way.

Really looking forward to getting along to a bunch of group trips over the coming year (and beyond) and getting to know the regulars :)

Cheers,
Dave E

PS. Even though I am now starting to get the hang of using a forum, I myself don't expect to be on here every day. There may be weeks that go by without a peep from me (depends how busy I am with the rest of my life :/) ... but even then, I will be back.

Back on topic -- keep up the good work guys (and ladies -- did notice some of you are posting)

Scotts probably too busy workin on that 3.5 kg nugget, tryin to get it up out of the hole without a scratch. Propointer goin crazy an all !!!!!!!

Apart from one bloke there was some pretty good advice/info I thought?
Good advice on this thread too. A much wiser member than me once wrote "tell people where you've been not where your at now" or words to that effect. I think that's pretty solid whether your chasing gold or gems or both. Don't know of many that will tell of their current gold or gem patch but plenty will tell you where they've done ok in the past that may still throw something up.
Don't let the minority ruin it for you! You'll find some of us a bit guarded online but a lot more amicable via PM or in person.

Hi Everyone I've just been searching for a spot to go around Bendigo to metal detect as I am heading over that way and thought I would spend a day detecting and cant find any post that can give me a good location or even a starting point except that they found gold there at bendigo once upon a time... could anyone point me in the right directions as I don't have any knowledge of this area and would really like to find my first nugget with my TDI any help would be greatly appreciated ... Regards GC

My John Tully maps have been a great investment and of huge benefit when used in conjunction with google earth

Good luck and cheers

J.T maps help see where the gold diggings were and to also point out flogged groind haha I like the little info he includes like fauna and chimneys etc.

I'd probably go whipstick too, never been there before.

But with bendigo / ballarat, I feel it really is a' throw your hat and dig where it lands' sort of place.

Na mate better luck in benalla hey ? ;) :p

Whipstick near notleys reserve (very well known) is as good a place as any access via neilborough road.
Lightning hill near eaglehawk to the north, spring gully to the south.

Journotown to the east if you know where to look.

As for good places well, you know tell em where you've been not where you are.

The locals are hit and miss, got to find your own way.
