Actually I find a decent paint brush quite handy. Good for brushing out the find dust so I can see what I'm dealing with before I get too aggressive.
Have also flicked stuff out and lost it before using too stiff bristles.

I left one of my nice new Facom lifetime warranty screwdrivers in Nuggety Gully near Glen Innes a few years back and I never even found a nugget
I think that fencing wire idea is pretty good but I'm not sure the local farmer would agree
