My first car a VW Beetle, during a long drive pulled into a servo and asked the attendant to check the oil. (Yes they did do that back in the 60's)

Yep and that 3' long gear shift through the floor with the tiny clutch, break and accelerator pedals. Funny but you couldn't kill em with a big stick.

We all built VW sand buggies, lifted the body off, roll bar and seatbelt and no sand dune or beach could stop us.
If you came to grief/breakdown (Very rare), 4 bolts and the motor was out to be loaded onto a mates buggy, and another to tow the now very light frame out.
Hours and hours of great fun many weekends.

Old model VW beetles used to catch on fire because the battery was under the backseat and had a metal cover, if it wasn't fitted properly would ark across the terminals or if the cover was missing and someone sat on backseat the springs underneath would touch the terminals and the coconut fiber under the seat would catch fire
