Old model VW beetles used to catch on fire because the battery was under the backseat and had a metal cover, if it wasn't fitted properly would ark across the terminals or if the cover was missing and someone sat on backseat the springs underneath would touch the terminals and the coconut fiber under the seat would catch fire

Dune buggy, we had very large tyres on ours, possibly small aircraft tyres.

We apprentices didn't have much spare cash so we parted the original wheels in the lathe and rolled a 100mm ring and welded that between the halves and scrounged some tyres from the dumps and no sandhill stopped us. Many weekends of geat fun.
(Was a second year apprentice when I got my licence. A huge 7/6 shillings/week.)
