Chinese goosberries come from New Zealand? They are native to and come from CHINA.
New Zealand agriculturists registered the name of Kiwi Fruit for Chinese goosberries as a marketing exercise. Whatever you like to call them they are one and the same fruit, now grown extensively throughout the world not only in China and New Zealand.

The plant is native to China, but the Chinese seldom grew it and apparently didn't breed, farm or market it - it was regarded as medicinal and just gathered from the wild if needed. The Chinese names for the plant translate as "Macaque peach".

In NZ it was cultivated and bred as a fruit crop from the early 20th century (probably by Chinese market-gardeners, who had dominated NZ vegetable markets since the goldrush days), and was always sold as a Chinese gooseberry. The name kiwifruit became established from the 1960's onwards, at a time when direct trade with China was unlawful in the US and largely non-existent elsewhere in non-communist countries.

3 with the Chinese Gooseberries coming from China (originally). Kiwi fruit comes from New Zealand. You could say pineapples come from Queensland, not from their original source of South America because we don't get them from there.
