Hundreds of thousands of lives were saved (malaria, typhus). But then they realised that it was causing environmental damage - killing disease-carrying insects was desirable, but not killing all insects and birds that ate them.

Interesting that if you ask most people nowadays, they think it was banned for killing humans, not insects!

Mind you, I wouldn't want my kids sprayed with it - so many chemicals can have profound but less obvious effects.
