I found alluvial gold last year in a big dry creek that's not known for gold , tried to find where it was coming from by sampling the hill run offs but no luck .
I'm missing something :8

Proposition ~ convince me of your expertise please , then if I except get half the gold we score .

No dreamers or powered dry/washers blowers will work out sorry .

Jack

Not an expert but might offer some suggestions that stimulate the brain ;)

We're the bits you found big, small, various, worn, rough, etc?

Rough might mean that it has eroded in situ by the creek, the reef is gone and you don't need to look upstream/up hill.

Was there more gold as you went downstream? That would lend weight to the above theory.

Was it really worn? Maybe the current creek has intersected an ancient stream bed so the gold isn't upstream of your current creek but it will be upstream of the ancient one (and downstream). Maybe look left and right of where the gold stops in the current creek. And look down deeper instead of looking upwards to a shedding reef.

When you say you have looked at the hill run offs I assume you mean run off streams rather than the hill sides? How hilly is it?

Essentially I have no idea but if any of that sparks a thought that helps then I'm happy :)

It may be from the a reef in the creek bed itself, or it may be from further upstream. Sample upstream until no gold is present, then start a methodical sampling to work out if it is from the hills and which side (mark your samples carefully or you will never find your reef), then continue taking samples to follow the gold. Sample from the top 100mm. Or the gold may be coming from an ancient river bed, so look for rounded rocks on the bank in a "V" shape. Ken.

Thanks Northeast & Ken2m for your input , Iv'e tried some of your ideas already , the gold is tiny size but clearly visible .
There is only one major creek that has the gold , Iv'e checked up stream with no luck

There is not bars or rocks , just a dry sand /gravel water cause .

Regards
Jack

Your gold can be from a source where the dry river has cut into an old alluvial bed that contains the Gold.
You need to work out where that "cut" starts.

I recon diggin4 gold is on the money Jack..Teetalpa fields near Yunta are like that all the gold is way deep in old creek beds and where a new creek has eroded down to that old creek bed thats where the gold could come from. The new creek could be flowing in a totally different direction to the old..See if your creek crosses an old gravel bed that could be your source..A couple of bob cats and a big dry blower and your in the colour..Just follow the old creek..Thats pretty much the Teetulpa Fields..Which I think have been bought by Aussie gold the same Women that owned the mining operation up at Tibbooburra..Cheers..

We have gold in a creek near caboolture....at least 40klm away from known alluvial areas..It has worked it's way down in the creeks in the major floods..it is also only in certain pockets of the creek (Usually around a 20mtr area of the creek)..its only fine and the pockets are an average 3 to 5 klms apart...Im no expert but it could be just flood gold.Good luck :Y:

I reckon diggin4gold & Baldy could be onto something Jack.
Any paleochannels or deep leads in the general area? The dry bed may be intersecting an old auriferous system that's source has long been eroded away & is now mostly covered hence no shedding found from sampling uphill?
Any noticeable differences/changes in rock/s along the current bed from where the gold is to other sections of the dry creek - may need to look over several hundred metres? Is there a build up or concentration of sedimentary rock like conglomerate, sandstone, shale etc. where your finding gold that stands out from the rest of the dry creek that may indicate the width of a possible intersection?
A Regolith-Landform map of the area may be of some help? (Some areas available freely NSW Resources)

Thanks diggin4 gold , Baldy . Smoky bandit & Mbasko for the good info !
If any of you blokes are out my way I'll show you the spot .

It was late winter last year when I stumbled on it by chance , was getting some creek gravel at the time & salted it with lead to test a device .
When i panned it off I could see what looked like fine gold , though it was probable something else until I picked out a bigger bit & bashed with a hammer a few times ,
sure enough it started to flatten out so then had a look under magnification to confirm :Y:

Cheers
Jack .

Hi Jack, havent been up that way for a while, but looks like will be coming your way in July..catch-up for a coffee then..

All the others have made valid points and the old saying that gold is where you find it is apt. As a geologist it would be a great help if we knew where you are and then I could look on a geological map and in the databases and give you a few further ideas.

Hi Araluen , The area is just out of Broken Hill , it's the second spot I've found very close by to town ' the other being in a different direction but had evidence of old timers having been there long ago .

Hey Baldy ' look forward to catching up in July :)

Have Fun
Jack .

Peg some strips of carpet at intervals along the creek to find the best spot, leave until a few good rain flushes and pull them out and pan off. Saves a lot of work, just takes time.
Any particular type of carpet ? Interesting idea if your not in a hurry.

Was it just one tiny pocket, like a once off or further gold downstream?

I ask due to size of gold. A bit of cross contamination with equipment was my first thought Shovel/device/boots/pan etc.

If you found further downstream deposits but nothing upstream then I see the need for further investigation.

I used the Outdoor Ripple type stuff from Bunnings, takes a bit to ciean, but will catch colour. Dig a little trench across the top and bury and peg the top to stop the water getting under.

G'Day Outback

Know BH quite well. You can find almost anything around there in any direction. Gold is a possibility. Further afield youve got gold up north which is well known, but if as you say you are closure to town then I would be looking at old laterite soils which essentially grow small to large nuggets non of which are alluvial. The nearest analogue would be the Portia deposits just over the border in SA. So it is well possible that there could be some similar accumulations nearer BH. I would sample out the creek bed on a small grid and in particular get down to the bedrock or a clay bottom. Use a hand auger is a good tool. See what shape your sampling suggests and look at the relationship to the surrounding topography.

The deposits don't make sense at this time , rich spots over a long run whilst nothing in the same gravel run close by ? :8
