Hi everyone,

I’ve had my Minelab X-Terra 705 for several years and used it for one summer in 2018. I have three coils for it.

After putting the unit away, I realized about six months later that I had left the batteries in—rookie mistake! I took them out and cleaned the green corrosion off the reachable terminals, which wasn’t too bad, and then packed it away again.

Now, four years later, I unpacked it, turned it on, and everything seemed fine. However, when I tried to turn it off and then back on, I encountered an error (see attached screenshot) that I can't seem to clear. I've searched high and low for information on this error code but haven't found anything.

Can anyone assist me with this issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Unit start with the above image & fades away.

Replace batteries with brand new good quality & same issue.

Looking to sell but need it working to do so.

These are the various error messages as per the XT705 user manual:

Unfortunately, your display isn't included in the above list, so I don't think it's an actual error message that you're seeing, more likely an internal connection failure IMHO. I've repeatedly had LCD calculators die in a similar way and replacing the internal 'non-replaceable' batteries doesn't fix them.

LCD technology relies on a 'sandwich' of components/connections/multi-level display elements, all stuck together - it's a miracle it works at all! When the adhesive starts to weaken with age (after only about 5-10 years!), the displays just die. Probably the only fix would be to cannibalise a display from a damaged 705, but it takes a high-level of skill to tinker with modern digital circuitry (miniature surface-mount components, lead-free solder, double-sided circuit boards, etc). Good luck!

G'day Blackwolf. I can see where the problem is. In the top right symbol it is displaying a circle with a dollar sign inside it. This means it will cost big bickies to fix it.

That wasn't any help was it!!!!!!

It's possible you still have some corrosion somewhere else that needs to be cleaned. Leaking batteries kill everything. Good luck with it.

Regards Axtyr.

Hi Nick
If none of the obvious items that you have checked are rectifying the issue we can have a look over the unit to get to the bottom of what's happening.
This will incur a fee for non warranty repairs of $135 for the inspection which also covers an hour of labor and an additional fixed priced of $20 return postage.
I have a suspicion that the corrosion from the battery has entered and either is making bad contact from the battery to the circuit board or even corroded some components on the board itself.
This is something that most electrical repair shops would be able to rectify and it may pay to get it inspected before sending it away as this would save you both time and money on the repair.

Hi Brendon
Thanks for the guidance & recommendations.
I'll dismantle the unit & have a bit of a tinker myself, prior to seeking an electronics stores assistance.
