I have a 2016 Mazda BT50 and have been thinking of putting an after market chip in it to reduce lag when accelerating. It is also a bit thirsty so I'm trying to get the best out of the car that I can. Is anyone familiar with any plug and play Chips that are any good? Any help appreciated. Thank you

Hi Rick,

Was looking at one of those things that you put into your accelerator harness to adjust the response. One of the mechanics that I was using said that with any of the chips or accelerator thingies you would have to upgrade your clutch (not sure if yours is manual or auto) as you would most likely burn out your standard clutch.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Doug

research research and research, old timer diesel mechanics say that chips just dump more fuel into the donk hence the power increase , long uphill hauls and towing may indicate that the exhaust temp rises with the engine effort some say they get an extra 10 kpl with a chip the BT50 has the 3.2 litre 5 cylinder donk , the young blokes reckon the chipping will give power to spin all 4 wheels , the salesman told them that, the 2 things that are consistent are , fitting a catch can will stop the crap from being recycled thru your donk, fitting a larger than standard intercooler will help with performance , painting the intercooler black is a waste of time, and there is an after marker gadget that is fitted to the fuel rail that improves performance with the uphill towing can't remember whats its called its not a chip but exhaust temperatures need to be managed looks like I have a task to find out whats its called don't know how to upgrade the auto cant even change the tranny fluid in those sealed units

This wil be an interesting thread to watch. As Iamgoldenoldie2 has just said research it. These days you also have the option of getting the computer remapped. I just did a quick search on it and came up with this from one company

increased power by 24% and torque by 18%.

CAR MAKE Mazda
MODEL Bt-50
CAR YEAR 2016
KM 30455
ENGINE LITER 3.2
CYLINDERS 5
FUEL TYPE Diesel
TRASMISSION Auto
POWER 139 Hp
TORQUE 502 Nm
REMAP POWER 173 Hp
REMAP TORQUE 594 Nm

I have a steinbauer chip in my 2005 prado and am very happy with it. I have enough power for towing and over tacking. I think that it has given me an extra 20kw and 25hp for memory.

The great thing with steinbauer is they have inbuilt safety system, Steinbauer Performance Modules are programmed to sense when your 4X4 is working hard for long periods (such as when towing up a long hill or driving over soft sand) and will automatically trim power back until its at 50% after one minute. This prevents exhaust gas temperatures from getting too hot and cooking your engine, and the unit will revert back to full power once the engine is not under any more stress.

Chipping a Diesel is one of the most stupid things a person can do, When it comes to chipping diesels it is a total minefield when it comes to getting them right, I have just finished watching a heap of info on this subject, It would appear that a person would be better of buying then right engine power in the first place instead of trying to make an underpowered diesel more powerful.

Try watching this before you empty ya wallet,

Put a Turbo, Exhaust,And Chip in the ever reliable 2002 Hilux..5 LE ,motor..45kw up to 65 kw..Has made a huge difference ..Has not increased fuel compsumtion..Still on the original clutch 466,000 km..We put the turbo and exhaust on but would not make any power until we re chipped it..I get around 600 km out of a 65 lt tank at 90 km /hr..If you want to save fuel take your foot off the gas pedal..Im sure there are good people near you that do this every day, run it past them..see what they say..

Yeah I'd have a look at a remap first. Had one on the Defender plus an exhaust upgrade, and it definitely makes a difference. More power and better fuel economy. I'm no expert, but I guess the tried and tested method of better air flow (in and out) with the right fuel mix = better burning.
Will other things fail more quickly due to the extra stress on the engine? Dunno.
I still try and drive conservatively, and only use the power when towing or climbing etc.

A remap or chipping can increase power quite dramatically and is a simple mod, so you have to ask the question why don't the manufacturers do it?

If you are ten years old you may say the technology is beyond the manufacturers, but if older you would understand there are other reasons. An engine is designed with certain parameters, it must have sufficient power, be reliable and last a reasonable amount of miles. The computers on modern diesels are set to do this. If you change these settings you can easily increase power but it will affect the other two.
Those that claim increased power with better fuel economy and no detriment to the engine are unfortunately living in ga ga land.

The chip is basically a bank of resistors that trick your sensors into reading lower air / fuel then what is actually being fed to the engine which makes the ecu deliver a higher volume , the turbo will work harder the fuel pressure will increase putting more strain on fuel pump and injectors. It does work for many but will also bring out any small faults in the system.
I did this in my hilux and the extra torque made the clutch slip and soon need replacement

To those in the know, is it just diesel engines that you wouldn't mod? What about petrol or carb engines?

Yeah that's what I was thinking, it will expose any weak points in the system

The good thing is its easy to remove and reset every thing as oppose to a remap, check out chiptune thats what I use its a plug and play system and its been ok for me, however ultimately your better off buying a more powerful car

if the makers of the vehicle could get more hp or better economy out of the engine and keep reliability then they would have done it factory ,i think in this day and age they need every edge they can get . its a bit like the old hiclone device they have been flogging for years if it was that easy to improve an engine then it would of been done on the production line . my thoughts .

This remapping sounds all well and good until you get pulled over and get given an emissions test and then ya stuffed, so you are either put off the road and the car companies will no longer work on your vehicle which means you are going to have to go back to the people who remapped it in the first place and pay them again to put it back as it was or be off the road.

If these Remapping experts were worth a toss then they would be employed by the car companies on a retainer or on a full time bases, But they are not, If your engine craps out It's your own fault, You can't blame the dealers because you have modified the vehicle or paid someone to do it, and the person doing the remapping is not going to pay for the repairs for your cat/truck.

To get better fuel economy out of a car you need to lean out the mixture when you lean it out you create a high risk of burning holes in pistons and that is not a cheap rebuild, all these know all experts should be arrested, because by doing what they are doing that vehicle no longer conforms with government guidelines and if you have an accident in that vehicle your insurance could be null and void, Or if your car craps out right in front of a semi and others in your car or another vehicle near loose their lives then that is down to you also, and you are playing Russian Roulette with other peoples lives,

From the factory these vehicles come set up to give the best possible fuel economy, performance and a long service life. Change one of those things and you sacrifice one of the others, Yes they might give better fuel economy or better performance but there are no guarantees as to how long it will last could be days weeks or even years, But unless these mapping clowns work for Nissan Toyota Ford or Mazda etc etc then they have no rights to be messing around with how they are set up which is why the car companies won't work on them after you have messed with it, And good on them for that, because the only way to get people to take note is to hit em where it hurts, In the Wallet.

Take for example the ford falcon 5.oL has two variants one producing 315kw the other 335 the differences are very minor things like air intake and tune the

Yep but you can bet they could get it to put out way more than that, but in terms of reliability I'd say that the 335 could be stretched a little higher but they want to maintain a safety margin.

most diesels can have up to 15-25% more power and that is still in the allowable power range of the engine dealers down the power a bit due to some engineer will start with a engine of a set hp and build the vehicle around it extra hp is only really used when say overtaking up a hill and take off cruising you wouldn't know the difference so chipping your engine is fine but a better exhaust system as well as a chip is a good option fyi I am a diesel mechanic for 28 plus years

At the end of the day remapping and tuning can be a good thing if its done correctly and within the limits of the capabilities of all the components within the engine, get it wrong and it goes bad fast. Is it worth doing? I take my chip as an exhample , yes it worked with no major issues but I still ended up buying a ford Everest 3.2l with better power and towing and its 10 times better than the 3.0 hilux with the chip... fuel economy and power make the hilux with chip feel like a bucket of crud

My remap came from Land rover. They have a few, some more aggressive than others.

People have been modifying engines for many years, there are positives and negatives, I'm not sure why people need to get so "worked" up over it.

(See that, "worked" up, like an engine, get it?
