You are on the money regarding his head shape, probably why it commonly referred to as a "bullhead" George III coin. ;)

I am just about mount some of my older coins in Importa coin holders after the debacle of using PVC sleeves last year. Unfortunately the chemicals in the PVC sleeves resulted in the clouding up of the coin faces with a white coating, so proper coin holders with mylar windows were next on the purchase list. Luckly none of the pre-decimals ever made it into those sleeves, just moderns.

Whilst you can buy coin holders in batches of single sizes, it was much easier just to buy a box of 500 assorted sizes for around $60 to suit various coins. The ones I purchased are stapled holders, or you can opt for the self adhesive ones. :)

Today I was back at one of my usual haunts, in the paddocks of a Victorian coin hotspot near an old swimming/boating lake. Four hours of detecting netted nothing more than assorted lead, shotgun shells, and projectiles, before hitting on a very high 96 ID on the Deus. Being that high I was thinking big silver, instead I unearthed one of the larger diameter 1847 Victorian pennies. Not sure what the story is behind the Z inscribed onto the face, though have seen similar on some other older English coins.

This larger form of the penny was only the third I have ever found, so was pretty happy with that. Last find for the day was the renmants of a pocket knife with wooden grips. The large grey clump on the left of the finds pic is actually lead, made up of thin folded sheets. :)

Edit: Had the chance to have a closer look at the penny, and it is 1843, not 1847 - even better.

Great hunting again GP with another oldie! How's the digger holding up?

The Raptor digger is excellent, love using it so far - should have gotten one sooner. ;)

Here's a park detect from last night, the pre-decs didn't appear till late in the evening, and as usual the silver turned up on the way back to the car. The pre-decs included 1951 & 1921 pennies, 1945 & 1943 hp's, and a lone 1945 sixpence. The 1945 hp was a bugger to retrieve, being stuck below some pretty thick tree roots, persistence paid off in the end. Also found the barrel off Rocket's toy pistol. :D

not too bad GP, few PD's you beauty!

im still waiting to find one of the earlier pennys.

They usually pop up when you least expect it. 90% of pre-decs at this spot are from the 1940's and onwards, so bit rare to find a coin that old. At least it is in good nick thanks to the sandy soil, most of the earlier pennies I found in Adelaide were either cactus, or you'd find that one face was good and the other side was usually oxidised to hell. :D
