Finally got a chance today to test out the new 10x5 coil on the ctx and it didn't disappoint. Located an old horse racing track on the parish map and went to check it out. Started at a small reserve and found $18.20 in decimals. Went for a walk to try and locate the flat part of the track. Found a small clearing and first tone was a 12:44, 13cm down and out came a silver coin. 1896 Gothic florin, what a way to christen the coil.
The next 1.5 hours we worked an area of about 10 squares, plenty of signals over 15cm deep. Concentrated on everything shallower and ended up with a 1953 shilling, 3 comm pennies 1916,1917 and 1921. 2 roo pennies 1948 and 1950. Half roo penny 1948. An old english penny from the 1800's. And 2 mystery items.
One is so worn that it will remain a mystery and the other is a surprise.
Turns out to be a 1774 Brazilian 40 Reis.
A long way from home but somehow managed to call Australia home.
What a range of coins, those old racetracks can certainly prove a gold mine of pre-decs if you are lucky enough to locate one. I remember on kimbucktwo someone hitting the jackpot on an old racecourse, literally hundreds of pre-decs came to light over several hunts.
The tags show the birth date of the pigeon, ID number, and organisation. So I am guessing one tag was still attached at the time, whether it was the age or ID, who knows - might pay to give them a call for clarification.
If it is indeed born in 1857, then this is probably what it might look like.
