Used to have a Valiant Charger back in the day.
Just arriving at work one day when the steering wheel started jumping in my hand. Pulled into the car park had a good look but could see no problem.
Swapped the front wheels to the back. Drove home that arvo, no problem.
2 nights later at about 2am, was driving back from ACT to Wollongong doing about 70mph (around 120kph) on the old Hume Hwy before it was divided and upgraded.
A loud bang followed by a series of horrific noises and vibrations. Had just come round a bend and over a crest. The Valiant shot sideways (going down hill at 120kph).
Brocky would have been proud of me. Got the beast straightened and pulled over. Got out out to find the right rear tread had peeled back 180 degrees without coming off the tyre. The rotating tread had torn the right rear wheel arch to shreds. Standing there looking at the damage, delayed shock set in and I started shaking uncontrollably.
Last time I ever put f***ing retreads on a car.

Left work a few years back, 20km drive, mostly 100kph, Friday night, got home, decided to go get a pizza for tea.

Drove 2kms to the pizza joint (50kph), got the pizza, got back in the car and did a reverse left hand turn out of the parking space.......

BANG - front end drops down on the driver side. Get out to find the wheel at about 45 degrees to vertical. It going nowhere.....

Had to call a tow truck to get the car home and left till Saturday morning to find the lower wishbone had torn off the pin it swivels on. Chassis side was ok, so off to the wrecker for another part and got the car back on the road for Monday morning, great. If memory serves it cost me $75 for the tow truck and $50 for the part, but this was the late 1980s.

The absolute scary part was that I'm so glad it happened when it did and not 15 minutes earlier when I was doing a 100 on the way home.
At least you got to sit on the bonnet eating pizza till the tow showed up! Think I would of went and grabbed a long neck as well. Chauffeur home!

$3,500 for a auto trans rebuild (yet to be done), giving the motor thats in the car a rebuild, so i think ill probably be 15k in the hole when im done with the engine/trans

Had car service today...

All went well until I picked it up..

The man said that will be $289 dollars...

I said I disagree with that price...

He looked at me....saying what you got no money to pay for this??

I replied what has money got to do with it?

He looked at me and repeated the price again to me...

I turned around and said to him has it been 5 years since I bought the car??

He looked it up on the computer and said no ..

He told me he will be in contact with me over this matter....

And handed me my car keys..

I have Free services on my car for 5 years

5 year warranty...

$500 cash back when I bought the car..

Capped services for the life of the car...

Car is only 3.5 years old now

I'm still waiting for the phone call

Goody :)

I'm not mechanically minded so forgive me if some of these facts are wrong, brother had on old fj45 land cruiser that we used on fishing trips to the west coast of sa. One trip we were a couple of hours shy of our destination of Venus Bay when something let go in the engine.
We had a slow old journey home, nearly 750kms at 70kms an hour and topping the oil up all the time, from memory about 20plus litres of black and gold oil to get home. Major rebuild when back in Adelaide, she'd dropped a couple of pots.

A lot of you followed my original post and gave advice so for the new people
This is a long story but will give you a laugh so grab a coffee some popcorn and have a read and smile

i have some sad news i am afraid i have had a possible death in the family (not confirmed yet) THE TURTLE
to set the story straight i will start at the beginning
3 years ago he came into my life like an electric shock sitting all alone at my mates house unloved dirty and bird ***** everywhere
checked his oil put in a battery and he started first go he had come alive with a growl and grumble of a work horse just for me and all the adventures ahead of us both
he has been on many adventures with me in that time and has always been there for me and always started first go
he never complained when it was cold/wet/hot or a long trip
he never said a word when he was overloaded (which is most of the time)
on long trips we would talk and joke with each other we were like brothers in arms (radio broken)
on Sunday i awoke and went to move him to my work area he started as always but had a little rattle (dont think he was feeling well)
turned him off thinking it might have been to early to wake him or maybe a bit cold
checked the oil water belts etc all good
started again and still there and what sounded like a top end rattle (mmmm not sounding good)
ok might head for home it just over an hour away
5k down the road the rattle gets louder then goes away a few more K's its back so i slow down to 60k's its almost gone
ok so now i am down to 50k's rattle is back with a vengeance (radio up full bore and can still hear it ( just joking radio broken)
over TWO hours later i pull into town by now he is sounding soooo sick
Take a moment to bow your head as another hard worker may not make it
Well the motor doctor came over today and had a listen to the rattle
mmmmmmm yes mmmmmmm there is a rattle in your motor
dah mate no kidding how did you work that out (he was only joking i hope what a silly sausage he is)
said to remove the top cover when i got home from work
yep no worries 4 nuts no problems easy peace of p*#@
home from work 12mm spanner in hand ready to go
disconnect the throttle linkage
removed the top cover bugger there is two covers
change to 12mm socket
ok remove the second cover (yea right)
nuts off won't budge ok
screw driver under and lever it off to easy
first bit of skin gone and still hasen't moved bleeding like a stuck pig
ok what next think think ahhhh yes thats right hammer and screw driver give it a belt bugger missed have you noticed that you miss the end of the screw driver but NEVER your thumb
sore thumb and more blood
ok lets work this out mmmmm yes bigger hammer (baby sledge) bigger screw driver yes that will work now its off (i will bend it back in shape later)
checked all rockers no wear checked all bolts all tight rattle still there
have you ever noticed that with the covers off the top of the motor and you rev the engine that oil goes everywhere (black oil that sticks to everything) at least it wont rust now
ring the mechanic let him know
ok short answer tow it to the local diesel mechanic as he can't do anything he is teaching at tafe so has not much free time (needs to spend it with his family)
went to the local vet (Diesel Tech repair shop) the other day to book the Turtle in
Last night i put him back together (turned out black as anything from the oil) so he could be driven started him up all running good now worries (yea right)
went back out 3 hours later to move him out the front ready to leave in the morning to take him to the vet
OK started him all of a sudden the back yard is covered in smoke the people over the back fence are panicking thinking i have set fire to something
remember i melt my own gold so they think i set fire to everything it was not that bad last time just some bark chips and grass the shed was ok (paint fixed that) and the garden hose put the fire out so whats the problem
any way the turtle is coughing and carrying on something chronic smoke every where
ok got him out the front parked and switched off (beer time had enough)
bugger the house smells funny dog must have farted
better shut the windows seems like its getting foggy inside
0700 standing looking at the turtle will i or will i call the tow truck mmmmmmmmm drive its quicker besides its only 5k straight down the highway what could go wrong ?
started him up he coughed the dog disappeared in a cloud of smoke the house is gone carport full of smoke next door have shut their windows ok so far so good
onto the highway lucky no cars behind me however it seems to be very foggy this morning i am sure there was no fog today when i started the car oh well
stopped at the lights suddenly there are cars coming out of the fog yelling something at me not sure must have been saying good morning had the window up and could not hear them
someone must be burning something there was a bad smell outside
pulled up out side the shop no one came out to greet me just shut the office door must be the fog getting inside
ok went inside said hi the old bloke said you dropped a valve ????? how did he know he never came outside oh well handed over the keys and he said he would ring me later in the week
walked outside the fog has gone must be going to be a nice day
Got a call from the doctor he is ready was my first thought
However the bubble of joy soon burst
They Done some more checks late yesterday
Number 4 piston gudgen shot
only was picked up when there was no noise around
the old guy heard a click when he was winding it over to look at the top of the number 4 piston again
Went in today to look and listen
They turned of the compressor and radio so i could hear
when the piston is at tdc its 1mm lower then number 1 piston
When you press on top of the piston it goes down with a loud click
another 2mm so that is 3mm difference between the two
new long motor ball park price might get some change out of 6k depending on where they can get a motor
And up to another 2 to 3 weeks before its back on the road again
Funny bone not working anymore humor has gone
Pulled my credit card out of my wallet and i am sure it started to cry
Going to have to take a month off work and find another gold patch i think mmmmmm yea right
Well the news today was not the best
Was talking on the phone to the mechs after i hung up one of the blokes asked did someone die as i was white as a ghost
I said yes my best mate the turtle he went and got me a coffee (i could milk this all day)
Then some big mouth told him the turtle was a bloody truck i think he swore at me he said a word i dont know the meaning of
After pricing a reco long motor and doing the injectors etc etc for the warranty the price was $10,000.00 keeps growing every time he makes a phone call
Ok so after a long chat it was decided to get a second hand one $5,000.00 fitted and going
So looks like he will have to go with a second hand transplant
I am going to keep the old one and rebuild it as a spare just in case
they will not let me spend $10k on the car as its not worth it
the big end is completely shot its self along with the cam shaft and piston
ok well the only motor i can get has over 500k on it already and is $4.5k
yes i know what you are going to say that i am so right him off
BUT (always a but)
went to see another mate to ask if he knew where i could get a motor from
his boss can out and asked what i was after
i told him he went away came back about 10 min later handed me a number and said i could have the whole car as the motor and running gear was fine but the body had fallen apart and could not be registered
it belonged to his father cost $1,500
location 5k out of town and i can use his trailer
If i had done what the postman (pa member) told me to do weeks ago (quote "go and see rob and ask him" unquote) i would be back on the road by now
The Turtle LIVES he has a new heart and is ready
look out gold we are coming to get you
No more sleeping on the cold ground no more cold meals
god life is so good
Final cost all up $3500.00
Well the sarga continues
Picked up the turtle god i love my car (i am sure i seen a tear in his lights)
Was told it blew a bit of smoke when it first started in the morning but that should die down after a few days mmmmmmm ok sound good i can work with that
Well took him for a run all went well yes way to go
Put him to bed yea ok so a cuddle as well he has been sick for a long time and needed a cuddle after all he is only human
Woke him up at 8 in the morning i could see he was rearing to go
Jumped in window down ahhhh fresh air
Key in the ignition glow plugs light up good start turned the key engine started way to go yea
My god what the ***** just happened
Dog got gassed and took off to hide down the back yard yelping like i had hit him
The house disappears in a cloud of smoke
The cab fills with smoke
sneezing and coughing like a two pack a day smoker for the last 50 years
Neighbors run outside yelling to put the bloody fire out the smoke is getting inside (Did i say i have had 6 neighbors in 2 years cant work out why)
Cars going down the highway are slowing down looking for the fire
Makes japan/china look like they have country air and no smog
Ok so a little bit of smoke mmmmmm
Injectors leaking overnight
Rang up got the ones out of my old head as i know they were good
this set fitted starts runs good ahhhhhh done
Next morning same thing again SMOKE OH MY GOD
cant find the dog dont think he likes the turtle anymore all he does now is pee on the tyres and runs away when its in the back yard
And when i get in to start it he runs away winging like a kid that wants a lollipop
Got a NEW set of injectors on monday fitted tuesday ($400 was a good deal i think)
Yes now we are cooking with gas
God how wrong could i be no bloody change
i think i saw a fire engine sitting down the road not sure couldn't see much for a while
Maybe the 4x4 with lights on the top that was there was the EPA well we will soon find out (dont answer private numbers that come up on my phone)
Did i mention the neighbors have now moved out something must have happened it was very quick maybe sickness in the family
to this day it still blows smoke on the first start of the day after that it is fine just learning to live with it while we work through different part replacements

Not actually a repair as such but.
Had a Nissan 280 zx once...third hand. Decided to take a trip to Brisbane only 1700 kays. Told my next door neighbor cousin where I was going and left my house kets with him. Drove to Broken Hill. Thought ok been a long drive might stop here in front of this bank and go for a short strole. Locked car up and off I went.came back after a bit unlocked car got in....ummm steering wheel club lock key must be here somewhere....penny dropped. Rang cousin. ..g'day mate um have you by any chance got a funny looking 4 sided key on my house key ring there....yeah why.....Just checking couldn't remember giving ir to you. Hung up... Bugger me, got my biggest ring spanner out of the back of the car, I'll break the bloody thing off. Sitting in my car and notice a nice cleaning lady from the bank watching me. Oh goody, not. Made out I was on my phone and she went inside the bank. Hooked the ring spanner around the club lock and forced it .....snap almost broke my hand on the dash.
Was trying to think how I was going to explaing this all to the local cop.
Gotta be lucky sometimes.

BTW Pizza was for the ex as well, so it came home complete and cold, but was reheated in the oven :)

Which reminds of another set of wheels I had. She was driving, came home on the back of an RAA towie.
Story I got was, stopped at the lights and went no further. Towie found most of the tranny fluid on the bitumen.

After it was fixed (and here I go back to 1979) I found that a $5 seal had blown near the tran pump. The other $500 was for labour to 3/4 strip the box to put it in.

And that was mates rates 8.(

Put new stereo in the old lux. All working well. Then the fun begins, wont start, power to the glo plugs , starter , lights etc. MMMM $80 tow truck to auto elec 4 hours labor $320. Seems I have a hidden kill switch under the dash. DOH
Aahh.... the old kill switch under the dash trick hey..... they will get you every time
I was a RAA patrol in a previous life and I wish I had a dollar for every job I attended with that little catch

I had a kill switch I wired into my statesman years ago.
I had to go to hospital for a week in Vic. and left the car in their car park. I went for a walk after few days to check it out and found the drivers window broken, steering column twisted and bent but the car was still there. Took me a few weeks to find a steering column from a wreckers.
Proved to me that they work. :)

Years ago as a mechanic I had a lady bring her car in complaining that there was a rattle somewhere but mostly going around corners. Ok so get in the car and to it for a drive around town. Yep defiantly a clunk noise mostly turning right and somewhere around passengers front door. Back to garage and pulled the left front door panel off and the plastic dustproofing.
There inside the door panel was a large nut tied to a string so every time she went around a corner it clunked. She had no idea who had done it but it had been doing it for ages.

Talking of rattles, a couple of years ago, I found a 0.1gr nugget sith my 5000, the smallest I'd found. Thought it would be a good idea to take a pic to send the wife, but my phone battery had died, so I held it in front of the dash cam, then dropped it straight down the demister vent. Wasn't going to strip the dash for a small one like that.

Somewhere there's a Toyo FJ Cruiser driving round with a very faint rattle, lol.

Needless to say, bugger the pictures until I'm over the dining table :)
