Managed to arrange a quick two hours in my favorite digs, a place I refer to as Royal Ascot on account of the beautiful gold it produces. The trick is to get through the overburden down through the gravel overburden which is a couple feet deep, and just on the orange/white clay layers were the chunky pieces are. Dug two flexi tubs in the raw heat and classified as I dug. One day I will take a trailer load of this pay dirt home and see what happens! Located a nice seasonal dam away from civilisation and did some panning with the turbo pan and panning out the cons with the old garrett.

It gets a bit soupy when there's no flow, and the trick is to puddle up those couple of inches on the contact zone. I have no idea where this pay streak ends but it hasn't stopped giving. As far as I can tell I'm the only alluvial chaser in this part of the diggings, but its not for the lazy. Any way here's today's effort, not bad for a panning session.

That's great GoldTarget and sounds like my idea of a great day out. With so many people detecting all that alluvial stuff is there for the taking...I love doing it the ld fashioned way.

well done

We'll done GT, some nice chunky bits there. On the odd occasion I do some panning just to see a little colour when the detecting is drawing blanks. When panning I usually scrape the top of the clay if possible, is that what you do or do you take an inch or two of clay?

Anywhere the contact zones between the gravels and the clay is good, and a couple inches either side horizontally. It can be hard to judge how deep the gold can be. I've been to digs taking an extra inch or two from the clays for some nice pockets of pickers where others have stopped. Can depend on location. I'm still learning though mate.

Thanks GT.

Sometimes when you hit the clay you can see small pebbles attached to the clay, whenever I find these I dig a little further just to be sure.

Cheers
