His first attempt was an 8 cylinder block with 2 cylinders on each side in a V shape and the bottom half of the engine was the in the same format ,but upside down ,so it had 8 cylinders in a block that was sort of in the shape of an X. After trialling it , they decided the bottom half was too close to the ground and too inconvenient on many levels , so he went back to the drawing board and invented the V8 engine.
