I think I am on the wrong track but the first Commonwealth Games (British Empire Games) to be held in Australia was hosted by Sydney at seven different venues in 1938.

Are you sure your date is right? In 1838 seven white men were convicted and hung for the slaughter of 28 Aboriginals at Myall Creek. I believe they were the first white people to be convicted of killing Aboriginals.
