OK then.....
Around 100 years ago,
I was tough, tall and strong.
Despite both my imposing stature and unpredictable moods, many a fool thought he could better me.
The lucky ones left with bruises, whilst others were occasionally left with broken bones.
You could count on one hand those who ever got the better of me.
Only a few people ever did I fully trust,
But one of those few was a fella named Andrew Barton ("Banjo") Paterson, we met each other aboard a ship.
Whilst much time has past now & many have probably forgotten about me or never heard of me,
My heroics in WW1 were talked about for years, were recorded in print and eventually even cast in bronze.
Dozens upon dozens of Aussie Diggers once cheered for me at Anzac Cove, when despite receiving bullet wounds I successfully ran the gauntlet.
Another time, whilst fighting in the Middle East. I was credited with the wounding of two enemy soldiers and with saving the lives of an Officer and 4 other troopers in the same night.
That same Officer was returned home to Australia due to a permanent leg injury he received that night. At a much later date, he then received an unexpected and substantial amount of money in the mail. That money was due to yet another of my war time exploits !
Yet, despite my many years of military service, my bravery under enemy fire and the accolades bestowed upon me by many.
I was never to return home to Australia after the war.
The High Command in fact ordered that I was to be shot beforehand.
.....by what name was I known ?
