Thank you Loamer I think that with the information I have gained from your self this site and from what I have been able to find with that information I think my chances are fairly high of finding something anyhoo.
You are quite right about the out dated laws but I do like the fact that I can go Fossiking in a fair few locations (provided I have permission) without any need for a licence. The guy I spoke with at DMITRE said I could use Fossiking as a type of exploration and if I find a source I can peg it out and then go through the process of putting in a minerals claim.
Every one that I have spoken to (access to land) has been really nice, and helpfull.
I won't be starting my serious fossiking until April. I have picked out an area in the states north, have accumulated most of the gear that I need, I even have a friend that will do a fly over magnetic survey of the area (still don't know what it is but it sound's cool) and another friend that is going to call in a Geologist friend of his.
My hopes are high but my expectations are modest if I find something, cool, if not it's back to work.

I saw some of the aerial survey guys, they are South Africans. Pretty cool set-up with the drone / electronics pod. Big $ but I believe it is meeting with success. same issue as us - huge country to detect with a plane. Just a matter of scale I guess.

Hey SApicker. What a terrific volume of reference material - a boon for "late starters" furiously working to update knowledge such as me. Am taking the liberty of getting amongst it. Hope to see you in the next SA gold rush ??

cheers

Hi Loamer. I too would like to express my appreciation for the volumes of instructional material you have included within this forum which has been a wonderful learning tool for this particular "late starter". Great work and an example of the best to be had from the forum. Many thanks.

No worries Spike. Once the school holidays are over I promise I will get out and do some more articles etc. I have my grandkids with me and the nippers make it a bit hard to get out.

No problem Spike's mate, I'll update this thread if I find anything interesting to pass on.
The way the economy and unemployment rate are going it looks like prime time for a gold rush with gold prices like this. :D

So I'm guessing you have not found anything over the past 5 years in SA ?

I have worked in Fed., State & Local Gov. for more than 20 years, most recently approx. 8 years in ACT before coming back to SA & from my experience I can see a pattern that 95% of the pollies are just plain 'dumb', only interested in whats in it for them :(
