hi mate as being a panel beater by trade plus worked in sheet metal making cylos, the migs that you can buy from bunnings ...ozito gasless model, will do the job for thin to mid thickness metal, anything heavy duty you will need a good mig on gas or a el cheapo stick welder will do the same. ive had the ozito one for 5 yrs now no problems at all, just change the tips regulary, my mate has a $150 cig unit about 8 yrs old from bunnings 130 amp, we have welded some thick metal with this unit. i think my mig maxes out at 90 amp on hi. hope this helps mate. :Y:

Thanks grumpygold the cig unit sounds like the go.

Just found this on bunnings website. Not inverter but sounds good to me.

if you can afford it this is the one i would be going for 100%, plus bunnings just exchange no questions asked if it has a problem, mite even have to buy one myself, pity bunnings do not have any specials or sales, just everyday low prices lol, good luck mate happy welding. :) :Y:

A lot of people forget to maintain the mig torch liners.

I blow mine out with DRY compressed air every time I change a roll of wire and replace the liners about every 4 - 6 rolls.

Liners are cheap , the drive motors dont get overworked that way too.

Guide tubes in those small machines are unlikely to get blocked up but its surprising how many mig machines are working like crap because guide tubes have not been cleaned for 5 - 10 years.

If you guys see a MIG that is performing like sheet , the most common faults for the checklist are ;

Check earth lead cable isnt frayed where its attached to the earth clamp and machine connection.
Check if tip needs replacing.
Check the liner isnt gummed up with copper dust
Check guide tube isnt gummed up.
Check the groove in the drive rolls , if its caked up with muck , scrape out the groove with an o-ring pick or wire brush.
Check the spring brake on the spool hub isnt too tight.
