Nice day out for all of you. Where do you have to go to get your fuel supplies.

We have three fuel outlets in town. The original Emporium has Diesel and high octane petrol on a self serve 24hr setup. The Puma in the industrial area has well priced Diesel but it rarely accepts any of my cards so I've given up going there. The main Ampol Roadhouse has truck diesel 5c cheaper than the regular bowsers and regular diesel at 191.8c, regular petrol at 185.9c so we're well catered for in that way.

Just looked up the town on google-looks like a lovely place to settle down. The unleaded is the same price as it is in East Brisbane. I'm still trying to burn off the load of crap LPG i bought from BP Stones cnr. I don't like paying the unleaded prices these days.

Jack, i feel your pain with lpg mate. Back in the early 90s i hada petrol/lpg company car and i loved it. I got about 1,100 klm on both tanks on a trip. Started it up on petrol and had a little switch to change over to gas after a couple of ks. However, when you get a bad batch, it is not good.
Best wishes
Mackka

Travelling the fitzroy development rd on our journey to rubyvale a turtle was noticed in the middle of the road, no water as far as the eye could see.

Fearing he may come to grief i put on the side of the road he was travelling too.

I had grey footwear on at the time and couldn't understand why he kept turning around trying to follow me back to the car so i stopped and waited see what his problem was ........suddenly i felt violated :8 :8 .

Said to the mrs we could always find a water source if we came across a random horny turtle if no camels are in sight to follow.

Anyway sorry mr. moneybox back to your post yes they certainly do get the walkabouts.

We're planning to head down to Perth to pickup Tonka's new tyre but the truck fan shroud shattered the other day. I'm not sure it could handle the summer heat on a long run like that. The next option is to take Mrs M's little Mercedes Vito van with Zimba's machinery trailer behind. That should carry the tyre if I stack a couple of pallets under it and should handle a few lengths of steel and aluminium too.

I don't usually do much checking of the vehicles between services but considering the weather I thought it a good time to do the long overdue coolant change. What I wasn't prepared for was the serpentine/fan belt that looked like it was about to leave the pulley.

The belt tensioner was worn out and causing the belt to run off the pulleys. I doubt we'd have made it to Perth but according to Murphy's law it was more likely to fail when we were fully loaded somewhere up the highway where there was no telephone reception.

These things are not made to come apart. They are a throw away item but after popping out a core plug and drilling out the riveted shaft end I could see what it was made of.

It was all looking a bit worn but the item causing the problem was this little wafer thin plastic bush. Of course these things are not available as parts and even if they were I have no way of getting them. A bit of nylon in the lathe soon sorted that out. Then all I had to do was drill and tap a thread into the end of the shaft where I removed the riveted end.

After inserting a little 6mm cap screw I stuffed it with grease. I had drilled to core plug to remove it so a pop rivet sorted that out.

All fixed as good as new.

Now it's just a case of changing the coolant, that's what started out as my Saturday morning's job :)

PTFE impregnated with Graphite.

I have seen this stuff wear steel out before the bush does.
Trailer spring bush's come to mind where they are used as well.

Nice bit off reinvention there MoneyBox. :)

In a way it was a big waste of time. I could have bought the whole thing on ebay for $95 delivered but the way freight is to here at the moment I wouldn't get to Perth for another two weeks at least. This way Mrs M can drive to Mount Magnet this morning for a swim with her friend.

I think we're getting soft or old or both. Prospecting season is upon us so we're making preparations for a gold detecting trip. The weather this year has been fierce and we've both been a bit off colour since getting our booster shots so we're trying to take a few home comforts with us.

HARRIER-LITE-KIT.jpg

We have a new Dometic Harrier Lite air conditioner on the way. There's often a part of the day where it's just way too hot to be out there so hopefully we'll be more comfortable back at camp.

Bus.jpg

My problem is that there's not a lot of space up there for an aircon. That front solar panel has to go. It's a 250W 24V panel but it's never really performed very well so I considered just removing it for this trip.

GE 2.JPG

A year or so back a friend gave me some old ex-mining company solar panels. These are General Electric 12V 110W panels so I decided to compare them.

GE 1.jpg

The two GE panels connected in series gives me 37.7V with an output of 5.8A.

250W 2.jpg

The single 24V 250W panel gives me 30.5V and 4.6A. It's sold as a bigger panel but simply can't produce the power compared to the old GE panels that have done their years and have been thrown out by the mining company.

Cheap Chinese panels are just that, cheap and nasty.

I chose the Harrier Lite AC because of its soft start. I can keep my Honda E20 generator that is quite old but has hardly done a day's work in its life.

I was expecting the new air-conditioner to arrive today and I had a feeling it might run from the inverter. The problem is that the inverter fan runs whenever the ambient temperature hits 30°C and that's when we need the air-con.

Inverter cover1.jpg

I made this cover up to quieten it a bit and put a layer of cotton waste inside to help deaden the roar of the fan. The top and bottom are open to allow for air flow so it's not as quiet as I'd like but it helps.

That was yesterday morning before I had to repair a flat tyre for Mrs M.

With five days of rain forecast I decided to slip out early this morning and take my last opportunity to run the dryblower.

Today's gold.jpg

I never get a lot of gold but it's consistent. I got home by morning tea to see a message from the freight company. My air-conditioner had arrived.

Dometic.jpg

It was a messy day with bogging the forklift twice. The unit weighed nearly 40kg so I had to use the fork to get it up the three metres onto the roof but my fork is on solid tyres and it only has to see a bit of gravel and it buries itself.

Anyway the job is done and the rain is pouring down. The air-con easily runs off the 1500w inverter but I doubt the batteries will take it for too long.

I loved the comment "I never get a lot of gold", man I reckon that all of use would love that "lot", but you have earned it, so great stuff.

Pablo, that is just a good photo with the iPhone :). You might be able to see the little translucent string near the middle of the nugget pile. That is a hair, perhaps an eyelash but it's about 10mm to 12mm long so that'll give you an idea of how fine the gold is 🔍.

Classifier.jpg

This is my classifier. You blokes might use a 300mm wide sieve but I use the tea strainer. The small stuff goes with the black sand which I keep for later.

The rain really tumbled down the other night so there'll be no dryblowing for a bit. Never mind Mrs M has quite a list of jobs for me on the whiteboard

Shadesail 1.jpg

This one has been on the list for a while. We have to come up with a shade sail to shed some of the falling flowers and leaves that drop into the fish pond.

Shadesail 2.jpg

It sounds like a simple job, just roll out some shade cloth, cut it to size and string it up. In reality it's a little more difficult. These things have a bit of shape built in to keep them from flapping about. The sides are scalloped and the perimeter has a heavily reinforced hem to take the wind stress. We've got a roll of seatbelt webbing for the edges and UV resistant thread to sew it. I didn't realise until today that I needed SS triangle "rings" for the corner mounting points. At least that takes the pressure off, I have to wait for express post so I have at least a week :)

I just heard another shower hitting the roof so I'm not going anywhere in a hurry but at least the new AC in the bus had the leak test.

Last year I set up this Coiltek 40" drag coil but never connected it to the quad. I just walked it for kilometres at a time and dropped little coloured ribbons at each target. After a few hours of trudging back and forth it gets tiring.

Drag coil 1.jpg

Yesterday I decided it was time to sort it out.

Drag coil 2.jpg

I didn't have to do much but I had no idea how it would perform behind the petrol powered quad but I shouldn't have worried. There's a little audio spike when I hit the starter than all is good. I did have a lot of chatter but there were dozens of road trains passing that had just been released from the Great Northern Highway road closures and more rain coming tonight so I expected some noise.

Skid.jpg

I have it skidding on a sheet of 4.5mm HDPE so it's as close to the ground as possible and slips over everything smoothly. The side strings fend off the small bushes and leading edge seems to clear the stones well. There's too much rubbish here to use it successfully but if I can find an area of reasonably uncontaminated ground it should perform well. Today I just picked up wire and rust and was pleased with the loud clear signal I got from an old corroded 22 bullet shell.
