I refilled with some fuel today at the server and was handed a 1966, 20 cent coin. It was very dirty looking and old. I showed it to a mate that told me it could possibly have some value, so I instantly googled on the phone. It was annoying to discover that it was not something special, but I did not know about the 'wavy' 20 cent coin until that day. Many more people know what I am talking about? I wish it was one of them but oh well...

Interesting. I did not know of the 'wavy" 20 cent coin either. Thanks for sharing. I'll have to keep my eye out for them.

I hate to add this but I will.... after hitting the goldfields and coming home with muddy boots the other week. I heard about this wavy coin business..... So we emptied the change jar, there were a lot of 20 cent coins...my son kept pulling out the 1966 ones and look what we found :) Not the greatest pic, but she is a wavy 20!!

Nice! It's worth a decent amount. The other coin to look out for is the year 2000 $1 mule, I've had tons of regular ones still waiting for the right one. They fetch $500 at a minimum do check your change had for that one

I am sure it is,just can't quite see it from pic. hard to find. mbe ebay it. :p

When compared to the other 1966 coins we have it looks very different, I have shown it to three different people and asked to spot the difference. All spotted the wavy 2. The best part was it was my son who pulled it out of the jar, and said "is this one dad????" To which I replied, "yes mate yes it is!"
I must have looked at it for over an hour. This one is a keeper!

Along with the Adelaide pound! A little of gold prospecting but these are the paths this hobby takes us down......gold hunting some days, coins etc on others! It's funny, its the gold I want to find the most. The wavy 20c is worth way more than my gold I have found (probably as hard to find), but, it is the gold I am looking for!

Congrats Colmaca and The Nugget! I am glad that the post created a search and with outcomes! I was not expecting for anyone to have a find so quickly :) Looks like the one you have there The Nugget is much cleaner than the one I had been looking at, and the "wave" is very obvious on your one there mate!

Great job on the find!

For those who cannot spot the defect, look at the number "2". The line at the bottom of the 2 have a wavy shape rather than being straight.

Nice to see one, is there a story you have about its origin(found and electrolysisly cleaned perhaps) ? I just went through my dirty twenty cents finds jar,...but alas no such luck, only four 66's and all strait as a die.

DITTO. :(

It was in the spare change jar that's its story!! The coin was pretty dirty and had some gunk on it. When he asked if it was a wavy, I had to move muck out of the way to check!! So we soaked it in olive oil then just cleaned it with hot water and detergent to remove the muck. Took a while but got there in the end. Needless to say, we check all our 20's now!

There are plenty of other Aussie coins to look for

2000 incused 50 cent
2000 $1 mule
2001 upset federation $1
1972 5 cent
2010 upset 50 cents

I use to have a big list of them all but I can't find it now.
The value of the coin has a lot to do with the condition of it.
