Gday All,

I've been interested in metal detecting for quite a few years but never got started for a number of reasons. Anyway after way too much procrastinating I have recently bought a Garrett AT Gold to finally kickstart what ive wanted to do for so long.

I'm located in Canberra and im fortunate enough to have friends with property nearby in Braidwood who have already given me the go ahead to try my luck. Last weekend I went out there and tried for about 15mins but very quickly realised that I had no idea what I was doing. I decided to down tools and to go away and learn the basics on what im supposed to be doing. Probably should have done that in the first place, but my impatience won over. I just wanted to get out there and give it a go.

I've spent countless hours watching youtube videos which provide tons of education as to how to use the various detectors as well as reading the multitude of forums out there. Ive been absolutely hooked on watching and reading about how others from all over the world are enjoying this prospecting experience. One of the first things that I realised is that ive got a long way to go and that I need to be very patient so that I can learn it all properly from the start to make sure that I don't get frustrated and give it up before I get to experience what im hoping will be a long time hobby.

Anyway, i've joined this site because i've noticed that the help and advice on here always seems to be freely given and also that you guys appear to have already developed the patience that im fairly sure i will need to work on.

I look forward to posting here regularly and with a bit of luck, with some nice pics of treasures unearthed using my newly gained knowledge.

Cheers,
Brett

Welcome to PA Tradesman1, look forward to seeing some of your future finds.

Thanks Mate, Im looking forward to posting some nice pics of any decent finds. Early days though.

Loving this site with all the experienced guys, and liking LonelySilvers youtubes as well, among all the others.
Also have to say that I like your username as well.

Cheers,
Brett

radar hi all am also new to forum have been reading this forum for a couple of years now with my dad on and of for 45 years now i have been prospecting when time and work permits anyway hope to chat to you all
around nsw iv only had a metal detector 2 years now and hope to go to all the old spots

Thankyou all for the welcome, I knew id made the right choice joining this site. To the SilentBurglar, don't panic mate, im fairly sure ive got a fair bit of learning to go before I even come close to finding my own nuggets so im guessing you are safe for a while yet. :)

On a side note, I did try to reply to a post from LonelySilver about his video which showed him displaying some great coins and some relics but one of the items looked like a shell that hadn't been fired. I just wanted to try to warn of the dangers of those. His post was a couple of months ago so im sure someone here would have already brought it up, just wanted to make sure the shell had been handled correctly.

Cheers,
T1 ( I do like the abbreviation, any chance of changing my username?)

Edit,
Gday Radar, if you, or anyone for that matter is in the Canberra area, id be keen to catch up and go out and learn more. I work shiftwork though so the days that I can go out will be all over the shop.

Edit 2.
Hi Jaros, I really like the day that you joined this site, I just happens to be my birthday. The year is about 48 years out, but the date is spot on mate. Thankyou for the welcome.

Cheers,
Brett

Hi Radar, great to meet you too mate. Taree is a bit too far to catchup regularly but im sure we can arrange something to go out and try out these new detectors that take months off the time it used to take the old timer prospectors eh. :)

Cheers,
Brett

Thanks for the reply, no problems at all. Happy to stick with what ive started.

Cheers,

Brett

Unfortunately you can't change your user name. You will find that a lot of members use abbreviations for others names. Usually just initials.

yep i got awayto hillend a few months back didnt find gold did get a lot of lead shot you need a good week to gete nug or you could be lucky and get one in 5 minutes you just have to get your coil over one ;) ;)

From what ive read, the AT Gold that ive got can do as good as any VLF as long as the operator has the skills to make it work. That's where im severely lacking at the moment unfortunately. Oh well, looks like ive started my Grasshopper training in patience eh. :)

yep i had the at pro int for a long while wish i didnt sell it i am using a whites e series goldmaster for gold wich works great in nsw goldfields and a minelab 305 for coins i ailso use a bountyhunter tracker 4 wich i waterproofed for geting into pools for coins its been great have found lots of rings and coins cant recomend this side of the hobby more :)

I did a fair bit of research into what detector to get first in the $ range I was willing to part with and it really came down to the AT Pro and the AT Gold. The guys at detectaden in Canberra demonstrated both and explained the differences and I chose the Gold mainly because I wasn't going to see any salt water for a while so went with that. Ive found its not really a beginners detector, but even though im a beginner, a bit of research and learning im sure I should do ok with it. I picked up the pointer pro as well, so that should make it a bit easier as well.

All I need now is to get out there and practice. :)

thats it practice i am stil l learning the gold master although my last detector was a goldmaster v sat a good gold machinie i find the new goldmaster very easy to use not having to manualy ground balence all the time the at gold would be good in rivers you can get the nugs the others cant get

got to go now brett nice to meet you will catch up with soon radar keep on swinging

Cheers Radar, im definitely going to be in the water once the weather gets about 20degs warmer with the AT Gold, lots of vids showing where the gold might be in the crevices etc.

Anyway, havagood1 and probably catchup again.

Cheers,
Brett
