Possibly, I'm not too sure to be honest, Zircons usually look a lot smoother from there. I've heard of Yellow Sapphires coming from the area, you can get some strange coloured ones.

Hopefully the more experienced members will give an opinion.

Cheers Heatho, your smoothness thought sounds correct to me, found another one, pic below. This 2nd one is much deeper in colour. Sapphire would be nice :D

I know the feeling....sounds good to me Heatho, anything with colour I'll keep.
Cheers!

This is very different sapphire to the normal find

maybe 3 crt, it is the only sapphire i have ever found with an actual hexagonal shape within an hexagon, best find to date gg.

Does it float in a cup of water with a teaspoon full of salt mixed in ?

Just normal table salt(that will show if it is amber, Amber sinks in freshwater and floats in saltwater)

Not sure, do you mean epsom salt like used with the isolation tanks

Did not know that about amber. Almost definitely is a Sapphire though, just Amber coloured, they come it all sorts, the Hexagonal shape in the crystal is a dead giveaway.

Interesting, i wonder who the first person was to discover this trick, times like this i wish i had gone to uni

How does one go about prospecting for amber, fossilized tree sap that can be cut like a gemstone, never thought of finding amber, thanks will add to the todo list. I also wonder what structure it has, if it has one. I will read into it. Champion

Amber washes into the rivers(where it is present from ancient pine forests) and gets tumbled as it moves along the bottom towards the sea(big rain events hurry this along) when when it gets to the salt water(when it gets salty enough) it rises up to the surface (or bobs along the bottom) and gets washed up on shore if the prevailing winds are blowing in the right direction.
I suppose it would just get worn away if it had to travel too far through the sandy or gravely wash on its way to the sea, so you would have to have an old forest not overly far from the sea for it to make it there intact.(maybe)
And it would have to have been preserved in the first place in ancient times.

Hi All,

It might be Topaz, Zircon or Diamond??, Last week while sluicing at Oallen Ford this little Gem turned up in the cons, it was heavy in a pan . It was very small about 1.2mm.

It scratches glass easily , tried to melt it with Oxy/Mapp gas - no go so discounted a piece of glass anyway I have put it aside for a look under a microscope one day.
