Heya, heres a tiny bit of colour i got while panning in Tyndrum, Scotland. On a bit of a semi permenant oe in europe and for schengen visa requirements i ended up in scotland for a few days. I carry my pans everywhere and ended up passing through this one horse town so we stopped to pan. The outside temp was 6 above freezing according to the rental car, the water was alot colder. After a few hours and numb hands and feet i ended up with a few little specks and a lil piece about the size of a rice grain. So in my view the day was a success, will return again with my little sluice and go a few kms up the river.
Next stop Disentis, Switzerland. The canton i live in now has banned all forms of gold finding that involves waterways ie sluicing and panning. Though i do wonder if i can dig up some dirt and take it home. Anyway the canton over has no laws or regulations and i live about 50m from the border. My girlfriends brother works for credit suisse, he didnt see the funny side of me offering to turn up and have a scrounge through the vaults, so im stuck to finding "organic gold" as my girlfriend tells me. Anyway theres plenty of gold in suisse, not as much as home, but ill post pics of my finds as i find them.
Oh and has anyone had any luck crushing up the heavier pieces of ironstone? I found 2 nice little pieces completely covered in ironstone, makes me wonder how much ive caught and released.
Anyway happy hunting!

nice colour! especially from a one horse town :)

With regard to ironstone absolutely 90% of the big gold i catch in the highbanker in Creswick is coming out of ironstone matrix, usually you can tell by the way it acts in the pan it doesn't roll so much if that makes sense.

Here ya go phantom, not the best photos my phone snot playing fair this morning, these are two samples from creswick. different locations the bottom pic larger piece is only .1 grams but was/looked like ironstone before a i flattened it and chipped the coating off with a knife.

The old timers had a saying that "Gold wears an iron hat".
I had a friend visit Forsyth recently and they were finding what he called Black Gold.
The gold was completely covered in a black iron matrix, a bit like the one in the bottom photo but completely covered so it just looked like ironstone.

thats the gospel in bench deposit areas like creswick. we find layers of wash some barron some very rich, the clearest indicator is ironstone. THeres another trick i use that i havent shared with anyone actually. I have a rare earth magnet in my pack whihc came out of an old harddrive, its only the size of a 10 cent peiece. pass this over the wash areas and when you see magnetite jumping onto the magnet thats usually the layer where the gold is :) 9/10 its also where the irontstone lives

They are awesome magnets! I have a dozen or so around my shed. Hang small tools on iron walls etc.

Ps. Nice colour ProspectorB

Great day for sure with Prospector B, we're starting to understand that particular area now so it should be fun times ahead.
Here's a few more little bits from Friday, not as impressive as B's but it's gold all the same and I'm one happy camper :)

I just remembered I had this little piece from my sluice tailings pan that was sparkling at me on Friday, stashed it into my loupe container and just got it out now to inspect it a little better, had hi hopes so I crushed it with some pliers in the pan and ended up with around 20 specs shining nicely at me in amongst the dirty stone, unfortunately they fluttered down to easily with the host rock..........Doh!!
