The AM sluices were designed for areas of mass black sand. When set up correctly, there should still be exchange of material in the riffles so they should never really "fill". The correct answer as to how often you should do a cleanup is "as often as you want to". When I use my Alaskan I cleanup after every bucket ... the small amount of concentrates these sluices produce make that a viable option. It is nice to know you are processing paying material.

Like Marked said the riffles will just keep exchanging material...
Gold will always push out black sand ...i treat it like im trying to fill it full of gold so i have less concentrates...you have to trust gold to do its heavy thing and i mean heavy thing....burrow its way down and stick....i reckon it moves around like a pce of gum real sticky.

I run the Grub Steak quite often when it's too difficult/far to lug in the Walbanker. I use it as a stream sluice when the creek has enough flow, otherwise I connect it to a plastic tub and pump water via WX10. While I believe the Grub Steak will handle material classified to 1/2 inch, I prefer to classify to 1/4 inch.

I find most of the gold catches in the first riffle (but not a lot of black sand); some in the second riffle (which will have more black sand), and some bits of gold make it as far as the 3rd and 4th riffle which are usually pretty full with black sand and ironstone gravel; don't find gold dropping in the lower riffles which are full of ironstone gravel and sands. I normally clean up after every second or third bucket. Cleanup is so simple, and quick because there is not much in the way of cons.

I have also used the Grub Steak to clean up the cons from my Walbanker - particularly useful for cleaning up the cons from the mat. When I do this, I put a pan below the Grub Steak to check that nothing has gotten through - have to report that in my experience, there are always several bits of fine/flour gold that get through the Grub Steak; plus it does not seem catch many of the small gems.

I love the Grub Steak, especially for testing a new patch, but find it it is fairly sensitive to the inclination and water velocity. Takes a bit of trial to get the combination just right. For me, I find the best combination is to have the inclination such that the feeding section (which is angled) has a downward slope of just 1-2 degrees, and then adjust water flow such that the first riffle clears itself of sand and gravel after about 5-10 seconds. If you have too much slope or too much flow, gold can either slip right over the first (and second) riffle or could blow out - have learnt this the hard way.

YMMV.

At risk of generating further comment which 'hijacks' this thread, perhaps mod might wish to move this post to a new thread.

Cheers

I cant get out this weekend so I decided to weigh up what I've found so far. I started this fun game on Jan 1st. Not amazing results probably, but not the worst for my first two months either I think. I'm well chuffed anyways. So here tis:

Almost a gram :D And I got half of that on my last outing, and probably 75% of it from my last few outings so I'm definately improving. Can't wait to get some more...

I hit the path i walk on to get to the creek! heaps of clay pretty easy shoveling with me mini banker. Troy got some nice peckers from top soil....gcause was crevicing the bedrock formation further down.....he showed me the vortex double bucket trick...amazing :D i was chatting with gcause cooling down sitting in creek he just finished his pan i pulled a weed out of the bedrock it came out sweet as clean....threw it in his pan and presto gold! He wasnt use to the rich colour of our gold....pure... it was great to see ya mate apoligies for leaving early i was in some pain as were you i bet. ;)

I reckon you could dig anywhere and find colour at deep creek...cause i have....gold is where you find it! Meaning its every where...
If you dont find colour there find a new hobby straight up

Either very lucky or some finely executed research paying off.....I think the latter mate.

That spot looks awesome and once you have processed that stockpile you may be able to get a GPZ?

well done

Thanks for hosting a great day out Yobskin, it was good to catch-up again. :D

My back didn't do too well afterwards though. I had parked in the same place as before and this time it took me over half an hour to shuffle back to the car at the top of the hill using my shovel as a crutch with lots of pitstops along the way. She sure ain't what she used to be I could have run up that hill no worries before the car accident. :(

Been recovering today as I am sure you are.
