Thought I'd start a basic kit topic to share. This is my kit for doing short distances and sample panning within 3km's of the car. A small bottle of water is usually in there too. Feel free to show your basic kits here too, I'll do another thread for a longer walk backpack setup too.

I could probably be using a better backpack rather than swinging the bag off my shovel, but it works well and is quick for me to pack up or get out just one of the items rather than having to unload a whole kit and worry about zips. The tarp is to sit on, throw dirt onto and also a cover if it rains.

In order, top row: Tarp, ice-cream container with cons / gems, rock pick, scoop, brush, sucker bottle, bug spray, gloves.
Then the shovel, carry bag, sieve and pans.

As you can see here it all fits with room in the bag, and I slide it down the shovel so I can carry it all on my shoulder while walking.

What about the donkey, imagine what he could carry for you!!
I have actually been thinking of trying to ride a horse for some of those longer journeys..

excellent post and picture- thanks mate!!
- Its a bit blurry dont know if I have dust on my phone or just a shaky hand, but it does the job heh. Cheers buddy

what I especially like - very much a good set-up at minimal cost. No need for 'wizza-tron 6000' pieces of kit when stock standard does the trick - ice cream containers - anything they can't be used for?? and bless you sir - a round nose shovel - not a flat face that you see being used now. The old diggers would love it.

have you seen the youtube videos on how to make your own sieves? have a look.

I like the first one there, thanks for the links loamer bud :D Yeah I can see that working quite well actually! I recon I might have a go at my own, will have to use stainless mesh as all the other ones I have used just have not lasted long at all. Thanks again.

Oh, as for your previous post, I have a rather funny story about my old 'flat' shovel. A mate of mine that taught me how to pan and sluice got rather angry with me and my shovel, to the extent that he told me to literally *@%$ it off and throw it in the bush because it was making him angry watching me use it. He let me use his shovel for the day, the same as the one I have now. The old flat shovel is still down in the bush somewhere from when I tossed it for him. It was a great step forwards to being able to prospect well, and I laugh at how he insisted I get rid of it, he is a great bloke and gives me heaps of info on sluices, helped me bend up my 9", 1 & 1/2 meter sluice I am still working on.

yeah mate - flat bottomed = wrong. No creek bed is flat, all those nooks and crannies, hence the round nose. I am trying to find a video I saw once about making classifiers using a 20 litre plastic bucket and wire sizes of your choice.

When I get the chance I will be welding a couple of sides around the shovel and on the back to stop that gold 'escaping' with the water as well :) I tested it out using gaffa tape for one day ( which I was amazed it lasted for 2 days ), and I swear it increased my yield by 50%!!

Thanks outboard as well for more links to it all, but I would definitely be using the bars across the mesh unlike Ag Man's, only because I am a rough ******* :) But his design is still great!

Anyone else got some pics of their minimal kits they take a long with them on short / sample digs?

That's it. Keep it simple. No need to spend hundreds of dollars and you will find gold with this gear. Good post. :)

This is my prospecting back pack. I like to carry it on my back so I can carry shovel and a sluice box in my hands through the scrub. It has everything in it including a chair to sit down when you panning.
Excellent mate! When I do a bigger walk I have a backpack, but its more for carrying the extras if I need to. The bag does annoy me a bit, but it saves using zips. I do love the way you can strap your pan in like that though, its fast and accessible! Thanks for posting another example

No probs I'll contribute a pic, but on the subject of gold escaping from the shovel when digging in water i've long used a trenching shovel in creeks. Good for getting in around, under and in between boulders. You lose less washdirt coming up out of the water and across to your sieve.

I used the same shovel for a good 12 months mate welded a back and sides on it makes a huge difference to splitting your boots from the rear pf the shovel.

I snapped the strap on my bag been hanging it over the shovel ever since. Great setup, the walking is half the fun.

casper - Havnt used a post hole digger yet as they look that bit too small and I move a lot of gravel, but I'll see if I can borrow one just to have a go at it!

G0lddigg@ - I didnt think of the wear on my thongs ( lol ) but they do get a wear mark and crack from digging on the sharp edge of the shovel. I love the ol Spear and Jackson, I can help but say the brand as if Sean Connery was saying it: "Schpeer arnd Jarckshon"

Balx - I don't find it to be much of a struggle carrying the bag / shovel on the shoulder for the short trips close to the car. I do use a hiking bag for when I am doing a bit more like taking a sluice out or going to an area where I may have to turn on 'survival mode'.

Cool! Seems I am closer to having a basic kit together than I thought. The last few bits aren't expensive and easy to track down.
Nice to see what you guys are using and how you are packing it for carrying :D
