Hi all,

Was out around Dunolly today. Detector (MXT) kept sounding on one particular spot and I spent an hour or more digging and waving the detector over the dirt I took out but still didn't get down to the target. Still sounding but had to leave it, 8.( relo's restless to get going so I had to give up. I'd just spent time talking to Dean in Gold Search so had the MXT working well. First proper sound that wasn't sounding like iron. I took some rocks home (don't think they are ironstone) that set the TRX off but there was something deeper that kept sounding. Didn't seem mineralised ground so not sure what it could be, hopeful of gold of course but detector was saying $1 when set to coin and jewellery mode. Big item when set on relic mode. Small short beep. I thought it may have been an old coin deeper down than I had dug.

I filled the hole back in but put a stick in the middle of it with a white paper napkin on the end, so it's easily seen. Am hopeful someone more experienced will go out and find whatever the target was and let me know. I guess if it's the mother lode I'd love a half share. :D

If you're keen to track down my "X" pm me for details. Or to ask any questions before you head out there so it's not a waste of time.

Ha, ha :D

Well if someone had told me that piece of info I wouldn't have done it. But the napkin was all I had at the time and I was quite a distance from the car without much hope of finding the spot again so I had to do it. Couldn't just walk away from it without leaving an "X".

Pity you weren't closer Chewy :D

At Kilkivan today I dug two like that; but at least when I got to 20" there was the target. An old tin that was dated well before my advent on this insane asylum. Plus two other bits of junk.

Why do White's insist on making a detector that finds junk nearly two feet deep. Four holes and nearly three hours digging. I know just how you feel Karen! (But it did occur to me that a good GPS or Smart-phone unit would be an asset in a situation like that).

It was fortuitous there was some Guinness and some twelve year old scotch available when I got home!

The Leperycorns will have thousands of sticks with a white paper napkin on the end all over the area by now.

Karen, I think if the napkin stays on, the target will still be there. I stay away from sticks with toilet paper for the reason Chewy stated. As you said a fair distance from the car( A good place to do business )

Cheers, DD

I think it will take someone a fairly long time to figure out the target but at least the hard work has been done. Probably too long for a video AR.
I just hope someone digs it. Will be interesting. Wish I could stay in the GT for longer. Not sure when I'll get back here again.

D.D - I'll be keeping a look out from now on for any white flags on sticks, :D

Found the spot! But that's all!!
Nothing in the hole tested with a 5000 and 7000. Big up to Karen though, the hole was well filled in! About a foot away were a couple of shallow lead pellets....fun all the same.

No the napkin WASN'T used! That's just grose Bazz! Eeww!

Sorry for my delayed reply. Took me a while to get internet back (and to recover from my long drive and getting back to work).

Struan contacted me and I gladly sent him the directions but what a pity there was nothing there for him to discover. I think I may need more practice with the MXT.
Learnt a lot by being out in the field though and seeing where people had dug their holes. Was interesting. Looking forward to my next trip down there.

Had such a fab time in the GT. One place I tried to find was at Surface Hill that is on Doug Stone's map, a very large above ground tunnel. Found Surface Hill rd but there was no large tunnel there when I ventured in on the dirt road. I found a nice dam though where some locals and their kids were fishing. Was a good spot for a quiet day out with the kids.
Dirt road looked suitable for 4wd further on so I had to turn around and go back.

Has anyone been to view the tunnel? Does it still exist?
