I found this today along with the sides and top which i am yet to bring home. The sides and top looked quite ornate with markings which i didnt get a chance to investigate. The front i did bring homewith this lovely knob. Possibly silver? Im not sure. And i dont know what the R stands for. Very interesting. Almost looks like an old reserve bank safe or chest.
any ideas or knowledge on this?

Door is very similar to the oven how ever. This is a door to a 50cm iron encasing. Has a lid, side piece and bottom. Didnt get a chance to have a proper look as the day was getting on and needed to return home. May be a letter box . What would the knob be made from ? And what era is this

I may as well keep the same thread of finds that need id'ing.
first of all im a coastal relic hunter, spending most of my time hunting by the sea, off the dunes, in hard to reach places.
I like the adventure, exploration and mystery as to whats beneath the earth that has been left by our historical past. Anything old can pop up.
First of all these buttons. Can anyone id them? I kept pulling these buttons out of a hole in which i gave up because it was button after button. What type of clothing has so many buttons? Trenchoat?
2nd the small bearings. Looks like they were shot out of ann old pistol, as one side is flat from impact. Google search comes up with very similar sized balls for a pistol, early 1800s.late 1700s.
3rd this copper boat nail. Looks to me to be late 1700s, perhaps from a site where repairs to a boat took place, my research came up with, in the same area matthew flinders beached his boat for repairs.
4th the brass or bronze u shaped item marked c 19. Wouldnt have a clue what this was used for. And google turns up nothing. Would love to hear if anyone has any insight to these items. And more to come
also nearby the old copper nail i found what looks to be an old lead makeshift plumb bob. Was deep and under a root so had been there a while. And again nearby the lead plub bob were these tiny pistol balls, pictured.

Those little flat button things look like rivets to me.
Can we have a photo side on please. :)

Maybe your right tathradj? However notice on the middle rivet/button some fabric fibres remain.

Yep, Rivets.
You can tell by the uneven small end.
If this came from a historic site, You may be holding some History there mate. :) :)

The thickness of the rivets suggests leather. That could be what's left hanging to the middle one as well?

I used to use very similar on Canvas to leather with Tarps years ago.
Well, Not that long ago.

If I remember rightly, in the olden days pre zippers and plastic buttons on flys, I am sure that they used removable button studs just like them ones but I could be terribly wrong too.
Cheers
Mackka

Leather rivets. First time ive heard of these. But im no history buff. I doubt jeans as there are an f load of them. As in i gave up pulling them out of the hole. So would these leather rivets have been from an old leather tarp ?

Maybe an old saddle?

The small buckle looks like it would adjust a stirrup quite well.

Notice the little knobby bit? Probably fits through the leather like a belt 'pin' does. ??

The buckle was a different location on another hunt. Didnt know what it was but looks like a belt buckle for sure.

I thought this is an interesting find. I dont know what it may have been. It was very deep, perhaps 20 inches deep. Sand dig so was manageable. Same area ive been finding loads of musket ball bullets. Definitely there a long time to get so deep. What is the hole for? I was thinking to dab a pen in ink. Or end of a walking stick? But possibly well off the mark
