What are some good fossicking places in penrith area?

Anyone know any good fossicking places in penrith area? Im in marsden park and I'm looking for somewhere not too far away to go fossicking for crystals such as amethyst, saphire, opal, garnets etc with my aunty and uncle. Im new to fossicking so any pointers would be much appreciated!

Hi Caitlin
Your best bet would most likely be around the Oberon area in the State Forests.
You'll need a fossicking permit issued by NSW State Forests Corp available here:

The permit costs $27.50 & can cover up to 5 family members (2 x adults & 3 x children under 18).

Blaxland Gem & Mineral Club would be a great place to start, fairly old club also. They do outings and are willing to help new people!

Closest would have been the Prospect Quarry. It was a source of world quality prenhite and a range of other minerals and specimens. Unfortunately, it was closed down in 2007 and is now an industrial development.

Another interesting reminder that we should have been prospecting and fossicking in the 1960's!
