Without trolling through all 45 pages , I'm thinking of making a walbanker with a removable hopper so I can remove it and have a sluice type entry funnel to use as a river sluice with the same bread crate and sloped alloy system ,
Anyone done this ? And did it work the same both as a sluice & highbanker ?
Cheers

Hi All,

I finally finished my Wal's Hibanker. Hopefully she will be fruitful. Pictures are attached.(sorry about the lighting, it's in a shed at night)

I did use aluminium legs, the are sloppy in the external tubes so have plenty of sway and movement.
Tomorrow we put the pump onto it to see how it handles.
Now I just need to organise a trip to put some dirty stuff through it.

Thanks Blisters, Looking at heading to Drake or Warwick for it's first outing. I am looking at building a self contained water supply setup, just need to work out how to filter the water enough so it will still work and not get to muddy.

Great looking build where are you going to break it in?

Thanks LL, I was a little concerned about this issue. I may just weld a foot onto it if it gives us any issues.

Looks great, try some flat on the bottom of the legs to stop them sinking into the ground when working the sluice. I hammered some wood up the tube and screwed ally flat onto it.
Cheers LL

Nice work ChilledNiko
As far as Water supply goes, what size water pump should we be using on Wals Hi-Banker?
What volume is needed and what angle would the Hi Banker be set at to get the right water flowing through.

Roughly how much did the materials cost this?

Regards Nomad :)

Hi Nomadz, I'm going a little stealth in my water pump and am using a 12 v 3700gph bilge pump from eBay. (Can't post links yet so have a look on eBay).
So far in tests it seems to be proving to push enough water through. Next weekend will be the true test.
The rest of your q's have been answered.
FYI. The unit I have built has cost under $100. (But I have off cuts of Ali at my work and a welder and welding skills to get me through) My mesh was sourced from a local safety walkway specialist. He was only to happy to give me a small offcut

Thanks for the response ref the bilge pump..
Would be interested in how your weekend test goes and whether you manged to get the flow/angles right to get the ripples working to trap the Gems.
What state you in (couldnt see it in your profile) ?

At the moment we are only using sieves to hunt Gems locally (Canberra) so looking for a cheap upgrade to speed up the process while i learn this hobby.

Regards Steve

Looking at working on a hopper that can be attached to the walbanker to turn it into something similar to a regular highbanker. This would mainly be used at areas like oallan so that I can run more stuff through when I am by myself. Just wondering if anyone has already made any similar conversions and if so how it turned out?.

Been done by the creator himself, and I am sure many others. Check the Wal nLiz youtube page. I'd post a link, but as I have not reached ten posts I can't sorry.
Great little vid from a few years back in the Shoalhaven river I believe.

Thanks PT73, I have had a look at his vids and couldn't find any where the walbanker had a hopper attachment. I am planning on keeping the design of the walbanker for chasing sapphires but was looking at being able to add a hopper to the flared section and having the tailing fall off the back. There is a video with Wal using a highbanker but It looks like a regular banker. Not sure if I missed something but will definitely be having another look at them.

Hi Willo, I checked the vid again and you are right. Could have sworn I've seen a walbanker with a hopper attached. I would still base it around Wal's highbanker. The only issue i can forsee may be the larger distance/fall height when a hopper box is set on top of the walbanker with flow, however this should only be a matter of fine tuning. With that said, Wal is very specific about getting the specs/ratios spot on, so I would imagine any addition would throw this out. It is all experimentation. Looking forward to see what you come up with. Sorry for giving you a bum steer mate.
