Myself and a friend and our wives are going on a 6 month trip to WA, leaving Brisbane in mid May. During our time over there we hope to do some detecting on a casual basis. However from the online information on the DMP site it appears very restrictive in that written permission is required before detecting anywhere. Have I got it wrong? One of the areas we where intertested in was around the Old Halls Creek area. Guys you help would be greatly appreciated.

Pretty sure that's not the case. Check the Miners Right pdf. Yes there are limitations pending existing 'occupancy'. But, the way I understand it, if no occupancy exists or an Exploration Licence (as opposed to a mining licence) is pending then its ok. Also, if you wish to detect on a live Exploration Licence, then you apply for a 40e after which (evidently about 3 weeks to approval) you can detect on that Live Exploration Licence for 3 months, and the Exploaration Licence holder evidently cannot block your application.

Am I wrong?

I just had a quick look around old halls creek and there is some lease land and a lot of pending land.
anything that is blue depending lease you are allowed on but if its on station you will need permission to access it.
most mine leases will allow you on there sites but must gain permission to get access.
it does take a bit to get you head around the geomap and the tengraph sites.both geomap and tengraph are put together by wa mines dept.
hope this helps and if you need more info just drop me a line at [Contact details removed as per forum rules, please add to your profile instead - Nugget]
