Victorian Miners Right information and questions

Okay thanks Hotrob, it take you have to carry it on you at all times while detecting?

So are state forests the only place you can detect for gold in Victoria ? just trying to get my head around where I will be allowed to detect when I come over for a trip from the Dark State.

Thats correct mate - both need a miners rights for fossiking prospecting

This is from Parks Web.
Prospecting typically involves the use of metal detectors, hand tools, pans or sluices in the search for gold, gemstones and other minerals

I know they can take equipment much like fishing without a license.

My query would be where does it say that someone using a detector to find signals isnt removing minerals and having the miners right holder to unearth them - the list of details could go on but hey for the low costs and 10 years - definitely well worth it.

I used to carry mine on me but when I renewed it, I just save a PDF copy on my phone. The old paper one was unreadable after a cpl of months.

You can also get a short term (3 yr?) Miners right if you don't get here often.

The Miners right allows you to prospect on Crown land, though no detecting in National parks...State parks Ok, but leave Rehabilitation or Preserved Historical Reserves alone...

Lots of open ground to walk and dig Wishfull..don't be disturbed about the SF's...

Put out a call-out when you hit Wedderburn and i'm sure you'll be swamped with offers....

When I last updated mine it cost me near $80.00 bucks two weeks later they put the price down .

I'd read that as State Forests, best to wait for GG's reply though I could be wrong, wouldn't be the 1st time :lol:

Wishfull, state forests yes, but there also some state/national/historic parks that you can prospect in.
There is a list of them on the site where you buy the miners right and they provide pretty good maps of the areas.
Just be careful though as you can detect in some of these parks but only certain spots - don't get caught in the banned spots. They are all marked on the maps - usually by a pick and shovel symbol.

And I do the same as someone suggested above - just take a screen shot of the miners right and then keep it on the phone :Y:

Also, you probably already know about GeoVic. But it doesn't show you the park/forest boundaries. There is another interactive map called forest explorer which is handy to show where the edge of the parks are. In the whip stick, for example, all the bush looks the same and you could easily pass onto someone's property without knowing.

I do the research before heading to a spot, read Trove for historical info, print out the GeoVic pic and also the forest explorer pic just to make sure I'm not in a banned bit of park or making a land owner cranky

Geovic I havnt looked at yet. Like most everyone here I don't want to get into any strife while trying to have a swing and a holiday and trying to do the right thing.
It woul be a heaps better if there were signs saying no prospecting.....No sign open to all seeing as it's all ours anyway.

Ah ha. So the licence is $23.70 for a period of 10 years. So have they come down in price ? I thought someone said they paid $80
