We were actually looking at doing a 10/14 day tour later in the year. Would something like this be ok or would we be getting ripped off.

We have done a river cruise in Burma a couple of years ago and the usual holiday stuff in Bankok and Phucket as a bit of back ground, Neither Bronny or I are really of a "back packers " age any more and I must have an electrical supply (12v/110/240 ) every night.

If there are better options to these organised tours ,can you point me/us in the right direction

cheers Keith and Bronny :Y:

It really boils down to if you want to do a bit of leg work yourself or just walk in with it all planned. The holiday from what I could see was $1172 per person ? I presume you have to buy tickets from Melb ? to Viet on top ? What I would do is simply buy an air fare at a good price probably under $600 each return . (Just had a quick look and currently Jetstar around $520 return and you could beat even that) Book a couple of nights in HCMC then have a look around and walk into a few agents and get some prices. I would say at a rough guess would be very surprised if you couldn't get the same type of deal for well under a $1000 for you both not each. I know people have even just found someone in Viet thrown them $500 and the person drives them around and is their personal guide for the week. $500 is a lot of money in Vietnam .................... when I met my wife she was working 94 hours a week and her wage was $140 Australian ................................. A MONTH.
You will certainly get better value for your money by going there and organizing your own stuff than booking thru a site from here. It's hard at times to understand what your dollars buy there compared to here but as an example my bill to park my car in an open paddock at Coolangatta airport costs me more when I return than what my hotel accommodation cost me whilst in Vietnam. My mates a big drinker ............................. 2 bottles of rum and a packet of cigarettes under $5 ................... Aust probably $100 to $120 for the same :Y:
I often laugh at prices given when my wifes beside me compared to when I go alone and look like Mr Tommy Tourist ................... then a few words in Viet with a smile and all of a sudden it's half the price funnily enough. Oh and they remember ................... have walked into BenTahn market and a stall vendor tells me I'm married to a viet lady and I brought a shirt of her ...................... two years ago ..................... unbelievable given the numbers that flow thru the place but a fact.
Oh and trust me I'm not back packer age  the place is so friendly and easy going .................. walk down the street talk to a few tourists they will put you onto someone. Talk to the motorcycle taxi guys you will find someone that will be happy to show you around or put you onto some on who can help you out.
Remember barter ........................ always ...................... even when you walk out of HCMC airport don't just grab a taxi as you come out the door as this is international arrivals and they know it ................ high prices ........................... walk down stairs and you will see a huge cab rank off to the right ( its huge trust me it cannot be missed) ....................... domestic flights and all of a sudden cheaper prices :Y: Have mentioned can do a 10 to 14 day trip for two at about $2000. Roughly $1200 air fares, $250 hotel bill leaving approx. $500 for spending money. Have had friends do the same trip thru a flight centre and the cost was over $5000 :/
Anyways just a few tips and hope it helps .............................. TET starts 16th Feb this year .................... allow a couple of weeks after that and Vietnams your oyster :Y: :Y: :Y:

Just checked Air Asia and can do a return ticket in early march for $429 ...................... costs me more to drive to Charters towers than that :)

Awsome. I think our next trip o/s after Patong/Phuket again in May will have to be Vietnam defiantly :Y:
Mrs Wishfull and I are taking our little 7 year old charge to Patong for 10 days. Can't wait, love that place. Bangla rd at the Tiger bar/ Q bar... well not too much with the little one taging along but the beach and scenery ! :Y:
