From your pics, these beautiful birds seem to have an affinity for places where their otherwise excellent scrub/grassland camouflage is completely useless - boat decks and campgrounds!
Bush Stone Curlew eerie call, especially in the dead of night. This guy was hanging around our van at Evans Head a few years ago

That is Dad minding the chicks until maturity.Saw this Emu with 5 chicks cruising the other day on a track. Pretty cool to see.
It's actually the emu father that does ALL of the nesting, hatching and chick-raising. The mother just lays the eggs near his chosen nesting spot and he rakes them into a cluster and resumes brooding. That is Dad minding the chicks until maturity.
Mum lays and sits on eggs until hatched then she buggers off leaving Dad responsible.
Stopped at Cocklebiddy road house today , where they have a pair of Wedged Tail eagles.
They really are magnificent birds..
I don't know the circumstances of those two, but I'd suspect they've suffered lasting wing injuries along the highway and have been rehabbed but cannot be released into the wild. It's nice to get to see these creatures but what a terrible life for a bird that should be souring freely above our great country.
