Today I Saw a Native Animal

Ive posted this little guy before..... he came into my camp on the Oodnadatta track in 2018 and kept me company on and off for a couple of days. The most beautiful natural animal to cross my path in the bush/ desert.

I felt so lucky that he happened by me.

Healthy looking fella ..hope he/she stays away from baits ..

Enjoyed more than one in my early days, found in the roots of our native wattle. From memory there is an actual Witchetty Bush inland Australia. Ours tasted like scrambled eggs?

Came across this little guy (Gal?) yesterday. He hunkered down in annoyance as I approached, then after I stood quietly for a while, he waddled off in disgust. He was rummaging around the tree looking for his dinner.
Out bushwalking near Dryandra (me that is, not the echidna, he was at home) 150km from Perth.

Mrs M pulled this little fellow up with a nugget.



When I was a kid we used to work these out of their funnel shaped hole by twirling a small stick around in the hole. I've never seen them this big. This one is about 15mm long and very agressive.




We used to call them a Devil Ant. I have no idea what their real name is but they rely on ants and other wandering critters faling down their pit that is formed with steep loose sides making escape almost impossible.

It's the larval form of an antlion, the adults of which look a bit like dragonflies. Apparently some people keep them as pets!:

We used to call them a Devil Ant.

We used to get them in suburban Perth.

We called them Ant Lions. I remember dropping things into their little cone holes to see them jump out and attack.

It's just a chick but I think it might grow into the Golden Goose



Although it could be the Ball Bearing bird. He's never been seen, never been heard but he roams around dropping ball bearings all over the ground.

I saw this beautiful moth and noticed the pattern on his back resembles a spider, that'll stop him getting eaten.

We're at the Evans Head caravan park for 4 weeks and there is a large colony of flying foxes in a protected reserve joining the park, they normally roost and sleep during the day, but something's upset them and they are going ballistic at the moment.

The first time I saw bats in the wild was at Broome in WA. I was looking at these large black birds, bigger than a large crow flying quite high over the camp site. It took me a while to work out that they were bats.

These Black Swans are always gathered out the front of the house.. feeding in the shallows.

I spotted this guy on my morning walk yesterday, he/she was hiding from 4 Murray Magpies that were swooping at him/her and squaking their heads off, maybe the grim reaper of the birds.

He/she is a Curlew. We occasionally see them out in the WA goldfields.
