Great to kick it off again. I am sure new and old members have found some older coins.
Remember we are trying to step back one year at a time.

CURRENTLY LOOKING FOR AN 1850 COIN OR TOKEN.

There are some Zombucks hidden in the hunter Valley . I don`t know how old they are or if they are from the 1850`s era ,but you might want to try finding them layful:

1851 penny token from J Mcfarlane grocers cnr of Elizabeth St and Lonsdale st Melbourne
Peace and Plenty it was actually the first pre decimal I'd ever found

Just stumbled onto this thread. Only ever been detecting for gold but have accidentally found a coupla coins on my travels that will come in handy to add to this if it gets down another few years. Have a few old gold rush sites just screaming for a coin hunter.
Buying a Nox 800 as soon as lockdown ends and this thread has given me an extra reason to hunt em down. Look forward to hopefully adding to the list

I can finally get my 1854 1 PFENNING in.

Really proud of this find, I dug it out of a friends front yard in Walkerville, Adelaide.
I have found a number of pre dec coins in his yard, more than him and he has a Minelabs 705 now too.
He wanted to see what was in his yard.

This is my earliest coin, and my next one is 1908 Half Penny, also found in his yard.

1854 was a pretty interesting year.
The SS Gothenberg sunk just South of Townsville on its way from Darwin to Adelaide.(Cyclone)
There were 22 survivors, but about 200 perished.
This was the year the Gold Rush hit the NT. And among its cargo was 97 kilos (3000 oz) of gold as well as a chest that the French diplomat had on board, containing @3000 of gold sovereigns.
Pretty sure that none of the gold was recovered.
Any divers here?

1846 half sovereign. Found in the GT using a 2300, thought it was a $2 coin at first, put it in my pocket then thought hang on, grabbed it out again and gave it a good looking.. only then did I realise what I'd found. Called my buddy over, he was blown away, couldn't keep him away from me after that hahaha

yeah pretty chuffed finding the coin. I think there's something special about finding coins compared to gold nuggets.. coins come with stories that sadly most of us will never fully understand. Ever since I found that half sovereign I always wondered why or how it became lost in the first place.

I have another coin that I'll dig up and post one day.. I'm convinced it has shot gun pellet marks on it

I say we make this thread disappear, and start it from the beginning once again, lot of water under the bridge since this one started, many new members here now since the change around , and lots of old members on some sort of hiatus from which none return(maybe).

Anyway, I vote for a restart/reset, so the fun can begin once more.
We could quote at the start that round one reached 1851 in so many days(or years lol).

One day we will be looking at round 5, or 10.
