what they used to do was 2 things build a long water race at the start of a flowing creek or a natural spring and direct it to a patch where someone had previously found a nugget or 2 then use there picks and dig up all the ground generally to about 1 to 3ft deep by 20 to 100m wide hence why its called surfacing then have a drainage point down from a low hill they wore digging on and direct all there pay into long tom sluices and strait into a creek there nuggets shod be caught in the sluices

anyway everyone's got there own opinion on it but that's just mine
