Check through the site there are plenty of hints on this site to get your 4500 singing nicely.
Your using the coil correctly. I run my coil like a broom at times, getting right under the twigs..
My mates 4500 is as good as my 5000 I rekon. Use the smallest bit you find to tune the 4500 down too. And anything bigger will jump at you.
The trick is to learn the many signals you pick up with the PI machines, spend a couple of hours over different ground with the smallest piece. You will soon pick up the different tunes.
