Nice little 1.4 carat Rubyvale blue. Original rough was 13 carats but there was a lot of smashed up material in it and I had to whittle it down much smaller, resulting in this perfectly clean stone. Bloke took his son up there for a dig (they have recently put down a shaft) and the young fella found it sticking out of the wall. It's going into an engagement ring for his girlfriend - always especially special when you found it yourself
Cheers guys, yes it's a pretty little stone. I thought I was going to have to cut it well off-table to get the owner anything back at all because of the shape - but in the end it came in almost dead on-table as you can see by the colour face-up.
I know - yet another pyralspite-type garnet, and also in the same design as the last stone . But I absolutely love these stones, there is just something about the better-quality almandine and pyrope garnets (and rhodolite) that really does it for me. This one is about 1.1 carats and was cut for a member of this forum (I don;t think he has posted for a very long time. I don't know where he got this one from.
No mate, I got chipped by the missus for not having used the thing yet (she bought me an fairly expensive one for taking pics of stones). I had a go yesterday but the SD card from the old one isn't compatible so I'll have to get a new one. This is just taken off the phone - and these sort of garnets seem to be easier to photograph than anything else.
Took a while to get an acceptable photo but here's a nice 3.15 carat light pink Harts range zircon, cut in a round brilliant but with a double cut pavilion, which really helps enhance the sparkle! It shows really good dispersion as well.
There you go, one of my favourite stones and colours, especially when faceting and the finish is alluring. Nice work Sir! A standard SRB or one with a twist?
Cheers Pat. The crown is a standard SRB but the pavillion has about twice the number of facets of a normal SRB - it really worked well! Although we can probably expect a zircon to be pretty lively anyway because it's a zircon, with that awesome RI
Most of these Harts range zircons appear to be some shade of pink. Of all the rough I have sitting here, probably 90%+ are pink, with a few colourless and pale yellow. There's just one here that looks to be a very interesting sort of cognac-colour. I'm not sure how much good material is in that one yet.
Cheers mate, yep would look great in a ring or pendant. Nice and firey when you see it moving. I've got a video but not sure how to post it here - think you need to have a youtube channel. I can facet stones but I'm not so great with computers
I had a nice big bag of Harts range garnets and zircons land in my lap - a lot of the zircons are smashed and a lot of the garnets are over-dark but there are some really nice ones of both types in there as well. I've been cutting more garnets than anything because I just love them but there's some zircons in there that I've ignored for too long I think.
But it might be time for something different soon.
