Have you tried photographing outside in full sunshine with a small bit of paper shading the stone ?
Keen to see you try it out on some of your recent stones to see if you think the technique works. 8) still experimenting myself with how to capture that perfect shot.

Marco Voltilini's "Nymphea" (modified) in light purple-pink Lowemead amethyst.......
Meant to resemble a flower, the outermost tier of crown facets are left lightly frosted to accentuate the floral appearence. Stone finished at 4.6 carats and just over 11mm across.
Stone is offered for sale in the classifieds section of the forum in "For Sale, Hire or Swap".

Stunning stuff lefty!
They're all really nice! I'm currently learning to facet and at the moment I am in the middle of taking some shots of someone's gems...had to take a break..it's kinda going but isn't really going the 'way I want' lol 8.( <<insert hair pulling emoticon>>

Facteing certainly has it's share of frustrations, particularly during the early learning phase - lots of swearing involved I still get frustrated trying to take decent photos of them, faceted stones can be camera-shy! (for me at least)

Photographing them can be a challenge! I've cut a few deep-coloured sapphires this week but while the eye can easily see many flashes of blue/green, the camera just sees a black stone So I haven't posted the photographs.

Continuing with the theme of me struggling to take a photo that remotely does the stone justice :/ - nonetheless, here is a 4.7 carat Mount Surprise topaz in Voltolini's "Lucciola".
How can anybody not love topaz? It's one of my favourite stones - so brilliant and lively! Nice and hard as well so perfectly suited to setting in jewellery. So reflective that it picks up images of everything around it - the orange splash in the bottom of it is Mrs Lefty's Lion King themed pyjamas, if you look real close you can just about make out Simba and Nala in the refelection Have a video as well that shows how lively it is but not sure how to upload it.

Cheers ktmman - no, it's not mine unfortunately, I just cut it for the owner. It does come from up that way though. I've got a couple more to do for him, he's got another nice colourless one that might finish up to twice the size of this one and also a really nice natural blue. The blue has a few issues and I might have to make two smaller stones out of it but they will be really nice stones I reckon. That natural, pale ice-blue really does it for me

London blue topaz in Akhavan's "Fallen Star" (modified) - 3.1 carat.
This demonstrates (if you could see a clear picture of the amethyst in the same design) how gemstones of different refractive indexes behave differently when cut in the same design. In the amethyst, the star was not particularly visible while in the topaz it is clearly visible. I still think the design works well for amethyst but the star is not as visible. Perhaps in a deeper shade..........
Brazillian amethyst (a bit blurry) in Akhavan's "Eye of Horus" - 5.3 carat.
Both of these stones are destined for my fathers extensive collection.
Rubyvale green sapphire in a round brilliant - 1.45 carat.
There is nothing dark about the stone at all, it is a light, bright green. The brown smudge in both photos is not really there, it seems to be a reflection from something.
This stone was intended to be placed in the for sale section. However, it sold before I had the chance to transfer the photos to this forum.
More are on their way before too long :Y:
