I spotted an area called Sewells Point (alluvial diggings) on one of the maps in that PDF, down closer to the river. A bit of googling and I came across something on a kayaking site that noted you need to get the key to the gate from the landowner to get down there, not sure if the gate is out on the main road or further in, but worth a look some time.....
It is very steep country at Sewells point, apparently the portage between car and the river is about 4 hours.

Holy crap, maybe they should try getting out of their kayaks first :)

Funnily enough, DB, I have a connection to Cowra Creek mine as well. My grandfather on the other side was a miner there and mum was a little kid on the field in the late 1930's.

Have you read any of Barry McGowan's books Dr D? I think Dust & Dreams covered a bit of the Cowra Ck history.

Bundy JD, I've got a number of Barry's books, but not that one!

I'll have to seek it out.

I'm not 100% sure it was covered in that book, but I'll try and remember to check tonight - before you lash out and buy it...

Yep - would have been a pretty harsh environment, especially in winter. So you haven't been out there?

BTW, looks like your local library might have a copy of that book :)

Thanks mate, that would be appreciated. Apparently it was a pretty isolated field, with the miners and families living on site.

DrDuck, I just had a quick look and there are a few pages on Cowra Ck or Cowarra which is what the 1930's era mining settlement was called, along with a few photos. The whole book is quite an interesting read actually.

There is also a fair bit of info about the area going right back to the late 1800's in Barry's Lost Mines Revisited book.

Cheers,
John
