I'm from the suburbs in Melbourne.. Out near diamond creek area.. Hence why I have had the pan out and hunting around the old panning and mining sites of he late 1800's. I have found small amounts of gold. It's fun but I'm ready to go for some bigger stuff in the Golden Triangle.

I have been told to look at buying one of these - Minelab - SD 2100. Thoughts?

OK, I'll set my sights on a TDI, cheers Wal.

My last couple of questions for you great sages of the swing:

1. As a newb, should I really be too fussy about (paying more) and getting the TDI Pro Oz Series over the vanilla TDI?
2. What are the best sites/places to keep an eye on for second hand detectors? I currently use eBay, Gumtree and the Offered section on the forum here.

I'd go the TDI Pro Oz....check out the other forums out there and make some inquiries with the bigger dealers on their trade in units....maybe start with Gold Search Australia in Dunolly, and have a chat with them.

Word of advice if you head down the TDI track. The standard coil is only good for coin detecting and not much chop on the gold fields. A coil such as the NF Sadie 8x6 is a far better option when it comes to sensitivity.

I'm probably going to get an SPP now, are you talking about the 12" mono that comes with the TDI and SPP?

In that case I'm hearing conflicting reports about it. I've heard others say it's good for gold. Do you mean it may not find 'tiny' gold under say, 0.3g?

Borrow a Sadie off someone once you get your detector and compare it against the standard 12" coil and get back to me on your results. Bet you a carton of beer on what I think will be your first choice of coil.....and it won't be the standard coil. ;)
