Detecting with the kids in a local park, I had a local woman come up to me and tell me off for detecting
and digging with the hand digger.

I told her it was legal and that the kids and I had a very good technique for not leaving holes or dead grass
and had found many historic things in the ground.
But also many many nails, screws, rusty tin and 'sharp items' - all removed of course

She was still a bit concerned and I explained that we had dug over 300 holes in the immediate area over 3 months
and asked her to find one of them including the last hole I had filled as she came up to me.

I had moved about 2m from the dig, and she could not see it at all.
She then asked about the history and seemed to become a lot more relaxed.
I explained we were pretty much aerating the soil while finding history and NEVER dug where the 'grounds' were kept
such as the playing fields, even when asked by locals that had lost jewelery while walking the dogs over those grounds
months previously.

She actually apologized and wished us luck, left us with a smile.

Nice to be left alone, but when we are not it is all in the way we handle the situation.
Always had a positive outcome so far.
:)

Too many jump to conclusions without investigating first. It always happens, had one swearing at me the other day from a backyard

Yeah get a lot of questions on the beach . The one I stick to is the council contracts my company out to keep the beach clean from sharp metals like syringes and bottle tops, pull tabs and glass ( yes my detector detects glass) I will show them a picture of the syringe I found the other day and pull out a couple of bottle tops . I say it's for tourist safety so you can enjoy your holiday and come back or recommend the place to others. I usually get a handshake and a picture taken.

This is pretty much what we use as a retrieval method, with greener grass it is invisible, dry ground is a little visible until the dirt dries, it rains or is watered.
Basically use the digger to make a hole by lifting/levering the center of the soil up, which creates a bump and cracks the soil slightly without root damage
and then poke the pinpointer into the hole under it, find the item and just press the bump back down.
It is so invisible that I have done this 3 or 4 times right next to the first hole chasing the target but none of it has been visible afterwards.

Took a long time to learn this, no more holes.
But happy to dig plugs when needed with the spade, just large plugs so the thing doesnt break apart or the grass killed by root damage, and so they 'key' back into the ground.
Lucky the woman didnt see me with that spade. LOL

I didnt think to carry a show and tell for the crowd but it is a good idea, never been hassled at the beach.

But was asked once by a woman if I was looking for syringes in the kids playground.

She didnt expect the reply, not bad but honest.

I just pick up any rubbish anyway, I must remember to carry a plastic bottle for those sharps !!

Thanks for the reminder Danny.

If you walk around dressed ans the Green Hornet and Kato it might just put the public at ease. Ive just watched Only Fools and Horses where Dellboy and Rodney go out dressed as Batman and Robin. It worked for them to help make the public feel at ease

I just stroll around naked, no one seems to bother me?
This day I had my fav blue shirt on as it was a bit chilly

LOL thats funny.

I spent two weeks in Perth dressed in only a bright pink bib and brace overall's.

My newly made friends were a 6'4" green lepricorn, and a 5'8" blonde haired guy wearing only a babies cloth nappy and holding a huge baby bottle.

We were driving around in a bright pink convertible VW.

Those were the days !

Glad to hear you good outcome GH :)

Hey Danny , i agree with picking up all rubbish you walk over and dig up, it shows good respect. making those type of claims could prove very counter productive to our hobby if challenged and followed up.
It usualy only takes one to ruin it for everyone else
