setting up xterra 705 for modern coin shooting?

Yes Teemore i agree with you in everything you say. It seems strange that not many of the fossickers are mentioning finding Gold using 705's in their posts. I am sure the unit finds gold.

I think that part of it is a lack of confidence and not having experience with PI detector. Almost everybody on any prospecting forum will tell you that it is unlikely to find gold with X-terra.. Then, when you finally get your first PI machine you find out that you are digging as much junk as you did with X-terra
It may be months before you get your first nugget. But because every one is telling you that PI finds gold, you persist. I have found gold with X-terra, but in the parks and sports grounds. Rings, earrings, pendants. So if you walk over nugget in the bush and it is at right depth, you will find it.

A vlf if within range will detect a nugget or coin in the gold fields.

The hand of faith was found with a vlf.

The issue and problems a vlf may face include noisy ground, ironstone and hot rocks.

So as your detecting if your in hot ground the machine will make all sorts of noises.

Unfortunately she's pretty slim pickings up at Nundle not to mention you're detecting on the side of a mountain . I've been detecting and alluvial prospecting this place for about 3 years now and have very little to show for it. After the last trip I've decided it's probably about time to start traveling the extra kms to try out some new ground.

The main thing is not to get discouraged and keep on swinging because you never know what the next dig will unveil. That's what I keep telling myself anyway

Haven't read entire thread but I agree Sa_bogan all metal, learn target ID's. I also read Randy Horton's Book on Xterra's available on minelab site for download free. It is excellent read.

Nuggett that wasn't a dig at you, just pointing out that even a high priced machine like yours doesn't guarantee a sniff of the yella.
Truly not a dig. M88888

The 705 struggles at the beach with wet sand or water ... great beginner's detector but once you are serious about detecting it is just a toy ... (and I don't mean that to be degrading to anyone who is using one) but once you use a Excalibur or Sovereign or CTX - you look at the 705 or Garrett Ace range and giggle.

I bought the Ace350 and Bogan had the 705. We spend the same amount of time detecting now that we have upgraded to the CTX and Sovereign and our finds have increased significantly ... same beaches ... same detecting patterns. I personally would not go back to using them. Probably fine for parks and dirt but not the beach.

must admit that the 705 is difficuly in wet sand and all I can do is power it right down to 10 or even less. So there is not a lot of depth.

Maybe a possible explanation for the lack of "good" targets at Goolwa ... ;) Adelaide metro beaches have no silver coins I think I recall someone saying ... A change of detectors and 6 months later Team Bogan have unearthed over 200 silver coins on those very same beaches...

Just a question.

How deep are these silver coins you guys are now
Finding?

G'Day, I have an Xterra 705 (1st and only detector) and have had alot of fun just getting out there and digging stuff up!
As most of my detecting is done "out bush" every day is Gold!
A couple of the notable finds include an 1835 sixpence:

Was over the moon to find this! Just imagining what this light/little coin had seen/bought in its lifetime is pure gold I reckon!
Also found some actual gold, .23 grams to be exact! An old timer threw this on his mullock heap and it is now probably worth a six pack :D

Now thats Gold!

Stick with the 705 she a good machine for the price!!

i would have to say it really depends on how much surf has hit the beach. found them in one scoop and then at 12'' and deeper. also depends on the size of the coin
