Hi

My son (9yo) and I are heading up to the Bathurst Oberon hill end area for a few days of gold panning, however we don’t have a 4wd. Can you tell me where are some
a) safe spots to go without a 4wd
B) easy at access locations are
C) somewhere he will be able to find some gold.
I’ll be staying in Bathurst so anywhere in that area would be amazing! Thankyou!

Coles bridge but with heavey rain river may be to high, green point sofala , at hill end i got my 4x2 past the chimneys and in even though they said 4wd but it was dry then, dont forget to contact crown land office in orange as you have to have a permit for every section of crown land you are on, if you are on 6 diff sections you need 6 lots on your permit, there is a forrest east of bathurst where there are logging trucks, not sure if permit required there, contact bathurst tourist office for some advise first it has been 2 yrs since i was up that way last, the best place to teach him is elderado vic around kangeroo crossing along woolshed rd, only need a q0yr miners right buy on line, there is a caravan park and beechworth not far away, plenty of flower gold there never gone the and came home with out gold, used to get 50 specs a pan but now on a bad day about 2 to3 specs a pan, only need basic tools, yabbi pump, sive, scratcher, pan and small shovel, you have to mainly park of the road and a short walk to the reedy creek, as parks 2 months ago buldozed about 22 tracks and blocked them so we cant camp by the creek, but left about 5 tracks to creek open, a y where along woolshed road to kangeroo crossing just walk the creek until vyou find a patch of paying bold. If you are camping out of holiday time just on the bend west of kangeroo crossing there is a flat spot to camp and little further west is the gardens.

Hey Lazypat, I’m so confused about this wole
Sections and permits, crown lands and fossicking areas. I have read so many threads and none of it feels clear!

So I go to the min view app, and then I chose to show under the fossicking tab I choose show crown land? And then decide where I’m going to go panning? Then I call the local council and tel them and they give me a permit for it?

How do I tell them where it is? Is there a number or something. I’m not even sure I know where I’m going lol

No like i said council have nothing to do with it these areas are crown land, you are better phoning the crown lands office in orange as they are the ones who will send you a 12 month tempory permit, like you i knew jack sh*t and was a very huge learning curve, as the lady only works there 2 days a week, you have to either ring on the day shes there or email her and she will get back to you when shes at work, foorestery you need a $27.50 12 month permit which is seperate for 12 months in a nsw fordest do that one on line if in a forrest area.
Bet east side of green point at sofala after you cross the river crossing is then bathurst council ratable land which you dont need a permit, but is usually farm land but good luck trying to get a farmer to let you on his land to prospect?
When i had no idea as the orange clo as me what the crown lands that i wanted to prospect on i had no idea as i had never been there b4, so i got her to pick out 4 lots for me and hill end common. Now if your going next week this wont happen, as after she sends these lots to you for a temp permit you have to sign and get them witnessed and then send them back to her on line and she sights them she then emails them back to you with the 12 month temp permit. I said why cant you be like the forrestery one permit for all land for 12 months, to complicated was her answer, as some is native title, other is crown land lease hold and they wont tell you who but you have to find the lease holder for his permission even with your permit b4 prospecting on his lease hold, then theres just crown land with lot numbers which your permit covers, its a night mare for every one, not sorth the risk with out it though, go to vic where rules are so simple just get a 10 yr miners right,on line. Just check the river and creek list for creeks you cant go one as they dont tell you the ones you can go on, then theres this section 7 they are just enforcing cant prospect on a section 7 i dont think farmers aŕe allowed to prospect on there own land idpf a section 7 it has totally confused most prospectors as thet never made it very c,ear as i believe all ballerat now is a section7 hope this helps if you can get your head around it
