Mentioning that it came from a laneway in Melbourne has me thinking of another possibilty Silicacious Furnace slag.
Still got my money on smokey quartz but need the hardness test.

Going by you pics, Smokey Quartz Cluster with Host quartz and 'rock' with it... There is a bit of 'reflection' in some pics so .... My Guess... Your Picture No 3 is the right Orientation For your Sample...

when i use a blade from my swiss army knife it hardly scratches it
