Is it legal to detect the side of a road to the fenceline?

I've seen some tempting spots, exposed rock that looks a lot like a reef plus lots of dense trees and vegetation.

I'm curious on that space between the side of the road and legal fence boundary? Is that space technically crown land and government owned like the footpath is council land in suburbs?

100% area dependent.
Tarred roads I would say generally no as most councils or roads dept. wouldn't allow any activity on roadsides without a permit due to safety concerns.
Crown dirt roads it may be possible but if you ask council/roads will still likely get told no. If it's a quiet track through properties maybe just talk to the landowner & let them know what you're doing first. May even open a gate or two for you.
