The black gunk is probably Ormonoid, a great product for sealing leaks in rooves and gutters. I use it where the plumber has pop riveted the two or more gutters together. Make sure the surface is clean and brush a quantity over the joint and no more leaks. From memory is comes as Paintable or Trowelable.

I've got a pair like this and they're darn handy to have when you need something that clips easily, grips hard and won't let go. Tweezers and long-nose pliers have their uses, but with those tools one of your hands is busy holding them, whereas with forceps, both hands are free.
