Maybe a silly question but does quartz in an area represent a gold finding area?

Quartz is a very common mineral distributed all over the world mate, so doesn't always mean gold, no.
If you look up the history of the area and discover gold mining was close by, then mabey your quartz could contain gold

a lot of the time you will find quartz with gold but not always gold with quartz if that makes sense mate, as AtomRat said a little research into mining in the area may be a welcome surprise in what you find out

Agree with all above that your best bet is to research the history of the area you intend to prospect. Quartz can be a great indicator in goldfields rich in quartz specimens. Other areas ironstone may be a better indicator. In areas where gold was found in alluvial gravels you may be best served searching for areas where gravels may have been deposited.
