It is also worth looking at the old working there from the 19th Century. The company made them safe and put viewing platforms and paths where you can look down into the old underground openings. Their new mine is just up the road a bit towards Dubbo. Also in the area to the SE of the Peak Hill area is the very large underground copper and gold mine at North Parkes. Well worth a look around.

are you talking about the RIO Tinto one ?

I was there doing a little contract about 15 years ago when the gold wasnt considered profitable to remove so they were selling the copper concentrate to japanese smelters with free gold included.

RIO made more money that year from the wheat crop above ground than what they made from underground mining. :eek:

I am sure their maths changed when the resources boom got some bang in its trousers
